How do you choose what song to cover?

Recently I've barely touched UTAU, I guess because every UST I possess would feel like some carbon copy.

This made me wonder, how do you choose what song to cover? What is your thinking behind it? How do you try and make it different from the others?

Back then, I picked songs to cover based on theme, music, and lyrics; to an extent, I still do, only I now also focused on voice type. Fro example, I'd never pick an UTAU with a soft voice to sing something hardcore like Senbonzakura nor a loud voice for a gentle song like Toeto. Overall, my choices are based on voice type; theme, music, and lyrics are secondary.

Well, I'm a noob still so how I choose songs is:
  • If a friend of mine requests ( I feel bound to do it)
  • If it's not been covered yet (or at least isn't visible when I search it up)
  • It's just that random inspiration; that feeling when I just sit down and say, "Hey, I feel like making a cover of this song~!"
  • After choosing the song, I try imagining which voicebank would sound best with it.
My idea behind each cover that I make is: I hope it could somehow be good. But sadly, to be honest, I'm not so sure my covers stand out from the rest yet.

I am in the same situation as yours, @skiyoshi...well, I used to cover basically songs I was adicted to, based on my different moods as well...

Nowadays I feel covering any song using the USTs I have is like....copying. I am, for now, making USTs myself for songs that I like and doesnt have any UTAU cover made;

The question I ask myself is,"What do I want to hear Kiyoteru sing?" Or, more often,"Do I want to hear a Kiyoteru version of this song?"

I have the bad luck of choosing songs that don't have a UST/VSQ, or have one that isn't satisfactory, so that gives me the chance to do things from scratch and make it completely to my preference.

Either I really like an original/cover and choose a VB to use or I have a VB I really want to use and choose among the USTs I've downloaded or find a UST for a song I think will suit it.

Whether or not someone has already covered the song with the UTAU is also big factor: if they used the same UTAU as the one I chose, I'll either use another VB of the utau or tune it in a different way (my own tuning style, different octave, adlibs, improvs, etc.)
