Does anyone else like visual novels?

I really love visual novels, and was wondering if anyone else likes them, too.

My favorite visual novel (well, actually, my favorite thing of all time outside of synth stuff) is Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I've got the original Japanese visual novels, the Steam release, the anime, and have a few books of the manga.

I don't care for romance or dating sim-type visual novels, which is unfortunately what most seem to be.

Anyone else?

Because the majority of visual novels are romance/dating sims, I'm not a huge fan of visual novels. Whether they're professional or fanmade, I'm not just not a huge fan of them.

I like visual novel though I don't get to play them much these days. I play visual novels mostly because ability to make choices. I could care less that there's romance but I enjoy romance orientated ones once they are executed properly. I'm a sucker of carefully thought out story lines lol.

I haven't played much (far less complete any lol) but I really liked Steins:Gate. I also played Hoshizora no Memoria, Red Shift, and started Homeward, Rewrite and the Infinity Series by KID.

I've been meaning to get Umineko no Naku Koro ni. How is it?

Yeah, I understand. I shy away from romance/dating sims, which makes it hard for me to find a novel I enjoy. Maybe that's why Umineko remains my favorite of all time, since it's not that. Hah.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude
IT IS SO GREAT
Alright, like it's entirely kinetic, there's no input, it's solid text but it is one heeeeeeeeeeeeell of a ride like
It's honestly changed how I view the world and everything it's wonderful
if you like mysteries it's /wonderful/ http://store.steampowered.com/app/406550/Umineko_When_They_Cry_Question_Arc/
dude i will buy this /for you/ next time i've got spare money i'm not even kidding just please read it

honestly some parts are very drawn out and overly-lengthy but i really cannot express how beautiful the novel as a whole is, and how tragic yet perfect it all pieces together
I like most visual novels because I'm actually a pretty big fan of romance ^///^

That said, my favourites would have to be the Danganronpa series (because they also have quite a bit of actual gameplay). They're far from perfect but, let's put it like this, I've pre-ordered the collector's edition of the third game already, and it doesn't come out until September 29th in the UK ^^'

Also, Kusoge ("shit game") is a free game, it's amazing (even if you don't like romance) and everyone should play it. Even when I know what's going to happen I still laugh XD
I personally prefer kinetic novels (no user input - I know, I'm lame), but I'll check out this novel.

Where has this game been my entire life?! Ugh, it's mystery and I like mystery anything so much.
put that money towards a mic for mic lol jk

There's also this game I played when I was at my friend's house. Late Shift. It's like a visual novel but with actual real people (it's a interactive cinematic film). It's pretty short (it is a movie so, it's expected) but it was so nice. It also has a good soundtrack.

Believe it or not, I actually did buy a Yeti for @SweetDevilSora! tho i'm serious about getting the vn for u if u want

Umineko is a massive mix of mystery and fantasy.
Steam only had the first half of the story (over 50 hours of reading) available right now, but I've spoken with the team that is translating the visual novel, and the second half (The Answer Arcs) are planned to be added as a separate release this year. But even so, with a lot of thinking and note taking, you can solve the mystery with only the first half of the story. Though the second half adds a lot more twists and new characters, haha

As much as I want it (and I really do), it'll be too much of a distraction for me right now cries. That, and I'll pay you back for it anyway.

It looks really good. I'm sure I'll enjoy playing it.

Have you ever thought of making a visual novel? Even if it's just an adaption of an already existing story?

I wouldn't call myself a fan of visual novels, but I've played some in the past. I really felt in love with "Katawa Shoujo", although it wasn't for long, as I've never completed it. I don't remember any other VNs that I tried, and yeah, that's weird.

What is even weirder is that I wanted to make a VN myself a year ago - I've seen how RenPy works and I thought it would be easy to learn and use. Back then, I had those two character in mind, and their universe felt a bit empty, and I thought it would be great to transform that universe into an experimental VN... with pixel art talk-sprites and backgrounds made of photographs.
Unfortunately, the project never really kicked off because I actually didn't start to do... anything. I had some short stories with these characters, but they didn't get much developement.
I don't think I would be going back to this project - mainly because I have so many other ones to do. ^^'

I have four projects carded to become visual novels (based on stories I've written myself) but I never got around to doing it because I didn't know anyone for art or the music. I did start off writing the script but it felt weird not having images to go along with it lol.

Music was the first thing that seemed to be an obstacle for me - I wasn't able to make music back then, (and I still can't lol) I didn't even have interest in it - which now I kinda do thanks to having an utau and getting much more into mixing things in audacity. (which I've been doing since late 2015)
But yeah, VNs are not really a thing for me, and right now I have lots of hobbies aaaand also responsibilities.

I made one based off of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, though it might not be what people would call professional.

I'll pick it up for you next week when I get paid, if I have money left over from rent and bills. Do NOT worry about paying me back.

I've always wanted to write my own Episode of Umineko.......but I'm afraid to try, as I constantly judge my writing against Ryukishi's...

Here's the link, if interested: https://www.4shared.com/zip/0XNICxrgce/Lord-of-the-Flies-all.html

I provided the voices of all the characters except the naval officer; I had to ask an older male colleague to voice him. So far, only a real-life friend and my sophomore English teacher have experienced it and they really enjoyed it. The visual novel itself would seem mediocre since it's the first and so far only one I've ever made, but I hope you enjoy it too.

As soon as fire up my laptop I'll read! Thanks!

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

I understand what you mean. I've wanted to do that for a lot of books but writing takes a lot of time and I don't have that much time lol. You can just write it just to have it and maybe improve on it over time. Who knows, it might be really good.

I played out three short visual novels in the past 10 hours. They had a nice story but they were too short lol. But I guess that's what happens with free ones. I'm currently playing Sickness Demo and it's so nice though it's only been what, 5 minutes>? xD

  • Diamond Rose
  • Max Massacre
  • Wander No More

I decided to get to work on the RPG-ish idea I had for my visual novel. Not sure about the art yet but I can at least scrap together some music. I should have some pages bookmarked concerning usable sprites and stuff.

I think I saw you post a status about this a while back.

I did. That was when the visual novel was officially complete (and updated).

Besides rereading Umineko for the second time, I am reading Notch - The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS. Which has a pretty terrible translation, but the story is compelling enough for me to continue.

I have a ton of visual novels on my Steam. 33 games total so far, with a handful being RPGs and one being Echo the Dolphin. So at least 20 vns. Yet I keep reading Umineko over and over

Maybe because it's so good lol.

I just downloaded two otome vns so I'll get started on those soon. Cinderella's Phenomenon and Locked Heart, both by Dicesuki. Not sure when I'm going to start them though...

Do you have a list of them that are purely fantasy? I need to get away from the romance genre for a while lol.

I've actually not read many visual novels yet. It's mainly my love for Umineko that keeps my interest in visual novels afloat. Haha. But if you haven't read it already, Higurashi is a series many enjoy.
