Did you know that mqdl has his own 3D application called Xismo?
The latest version has an improved UV editor, Meta4 import capabilities and a nifty hair modifier.
Here's a quick testrun:

(Don't let the image mislead you, I'm Linux-only for more than four years)
EDIT: I forgot something. This needs MSVC2013 under Windows.

sorry to bump an old thread, but might be worth checking out:

VRoid Studio, developed by Pixiv, is in its early stages but allows for easy modeling. Features include intuitive hair editing, simple texture editing. It comes with a base female model which can then be exported. (I think I've seen some VRoid models imported into VRChat and MMD.) Also available in English! Male model is in the works:

For some reason, VRoid does not work on Wine.
Also, Xismo 2 is in the works. It's still in beta thus some functions don't work as smooth as expected. It features a full 3D view and support for OpenGL 4.0. It used to have a PMX import function but it's missing from Beta 2 (maybe because I reported an issue with bones).
Another bummer is that it has a time limit. I recommend using 199b for general production instead.
Somebody please move this to 3D and MikuMikuDance.

I could make VRoid work on Linux back in 2019, but problem is that it's really CPU-heavy.
XISMO2 is at version 2.25a as of writing. There's no PMX import functionality as the creator eventually decided against it. Also, the plugin list is in a dire need of an update as plugins written for previous versions may not work in 2.8x.
