How different have your UTAU turned out from what you originally planned?

Most people have an idea of what they want their UTAU to look/sound like before they go through with recording and everything. Though oftentimes, this isn't what actually happens, for better or for worse.

What are some differences between what you originally planned for your UTAU and what actually happened, if there are any at all?

--------
For me personally,
Starting out, I always knew I wanted to make twin UTAU. However, I planned to make the girl (Taiga) the more powerful one and the boy (Tarou) to be the quieter. Instead, they're the opposite. Additionally, after recording, I found my voice was actually too boyish for Taiga and I only voiced Tarou while my friend voiced Taiga instead.

Also, though Taiga's design has stayed mostly the same (save for one change- her track jacket is now more of a bomber jacket), Tarou was originally different. He still had the same clothes and color scheme, but his hair was longer and more fluffy and in earlier forms he had freckles and a bandaid on his nose. He also had eyebags to match his sister, and his personality was a lot more mischevious. He was actually supposed to be a troublemaking boy who dabbled in the occult with curses and such, but now he's a very good natured normal boy who just likes the halloween aesthetic. Additionally, he now has glasses that he wears occasionally, mostly in professional settings.

Way back in the ancient year of 2011, I had planned to make two main characters: One based on good (light color scheme, high soft voice) and the other based on evil (dark color scheme, low powerful voice). By the time 2012 rolled around they were trashed.

But I still have the dual-main thing going on, just that it's high range/feminine vs low range/masculine. There's several character "tiers" that are based on the same two main voices. The seibetsus don't count.

For the first three, I basically made them as I went, didn't really have a plan. I had them as characters but didn't give them a voice until I recorded. That's normally how it was when I started.

The real notable one was Albert, who in the beginning was going to be a friendly but kind of mean spirited hockey jock, who somehow turned into an evil bioengineer. Not much changed about his looks since the first draft, but his actual character did a full 180.

Kutoma changed a bit too, but only in terms of voice. I had planned to make his voice much more booming and intimidating, but as I went and he developed more as a character, I dropped that.

That's about it. There's a few more in progress now, can't wait to see how they turn out. ^-^

since most of any utau concepts i had before 2015 were scrapped, i'll just go with my main one that i use right now!!
(this is an interesting post, so,,, sorry if my response is weird or long lol-- i just love this kind of thing)

RYATA MAXUM
- design -
when i originally designed ryata, his color scheme was the first thing that was certain. he was still black-clad as he is now, with the same black-and-purple hair too lol (although it wasnt finalized for a little while)
his original IDEA was to resemble another older utau that i scrapped, who also wore an all-black jacket with faux fur and sparkles lmao, it was supposed to be classy but i kinda failed so i dropped it at the time.

ryata was based on the one on the right lol
his design then shifted to...kinda,, emo,,, and took on a sort of "traditional" style, where he wore this weird looking kimono with lots of straps and chokers and stuff- he was just super edgy. it was also probably around then where i decided he would have red eyes, and take on this rather "pretty" look. :,) was the best tbh
the kimono thing was shortened and modernized, thus becoming his very first full concept:

ummm but then he had an mmd model made, so it got simplified AGAIN, and THIS was his official design for his first cv:
ryataloid_m_by_ayatonic-db1nyzf.png
(to keep it brief, i'm just going to skip his appends,, theyre not even main designs anyways so shhh)

upon having his first vcv bank finished, ryata got another new design, having been mellowed out even MORE than his official cv versus his original look. it featured longer hair and more defined makeup, also lacking the "teased" style that his old concepts had his hair as. this concept was also beginning to enter more into the goth side of his style- assuming that it was because his character is a vampire lmao (he was always a vampire- as part of his personality, but these designs really emphasized it: from this point on)
the vcv costume was a big shift in his original plans, being more feminine than before, and overall less... extra (ryata always had almost a "visual kei" theme(?) to him, and this concept kinda killed it lol)
i was SOOPER proud of this one when i made it, but its... okay now, kinda like to not talk about it:
ryata_maxum_vcv_by_ayatonic-dbex2ck.png

since vcv6 was kind of like.., an era for his designs, the upcoming concept of his "acute" bank was another turnaround. i was unsatisfied with how much ryata had changed aesthetics lmao and i felt like he was too watered down. (a lot of things were overhauled at this point too, not just his design)
acute was meant to resemble a more modern version of his original designs, and as thus, succeeded:
ryata_maxum_acute_by_ayatonic-dblzfjj.png
acute took on a far more gothic look than ever before, abandoning the "traditional" style completely. the design emphasizes current features of his old ones, as well. it's a nice mix of old and new- a refresher,, meant to put him "back on track" and it did.

in conclusion, ryata's design has changed... not much- i mean, it's had some overhauls already, but generally he has retained his same look. i had confidence issues in the past, but i love his acute costume right now, so it's gucci lol

- voice -
ryata is an experimental voice. he has succeeded two failed banks before him that were also attempts to create a stable voice like his own. the only thing i had in mind for his cv bank was that i wanted it to be low. since at the time i had never completed an utau bank before, i was grasping straws for just getting it RIGHT.
however, his cv bank is by far, my favorite of all of his banks. it has poor quality, and the usual others that come with the cv format, but it is to date the closest to how he was intended to sound. (kinda sad, rly)

(ignoring appends again)

ryata had many vcv attempts before his released "vcv6" bank, and they were all depressing. i was distraught because none of them sounded like how he was supposed to sound. (this was mostly because of a change in microphone but shh)
determined to recreate the ryata voice that i fell in love with, i finally produced vcv6 lmao:

vcv6 was a good bank for how functional it was, but it had things that suddenly began to bug me as the days went on. it didn't sound like ryata- it was again, too mellowed, and sounded fake and pitchy- so, i set out again to redo it. (this was kinda because it was my first successful vcv (theres a pattern here) but shshshshshshhhhh)

ryata's newest normal vcv is his acute bank. i could not be more proud of it lol, it was done after coming to the realization that i wasnt even recording ryata with the same voice as i used to. this bank was made entirely to replace his vcv6. it supports all of the same things his precious cv does, and has a one-note difference in range from the old bank. it took on an alternate function than vcv6: having not sounded shitty in its INTENDED range. (bc yes vcv6 sounded bad in its own range smh) its a harder voice too that doesnt change pitch too easily, and sounds less fake. i just love it tbh

also to compare to his cv:

acute did the same thing again with his design, it avenged his original ideas.

- character -
while his real name has always been ryata maxum, ryata used to go by an alias: ryataloid m.
it was changed to his formal name when his vcv6 was released because (-loid endings are cringey apparently) and there were too many spelling errors; mainly forgetting of the "M" on the end.
as for personality and lore, he has retained the same backstory and personality since the beginning, with minor changes.
(lazy and introverted vampire that is obsessed with sugar lmfao)
his character has developed more over time, and is now at a place that i believe i'm satisfied with.

IN CONCLUSION OF THIS ALL... ryata has had "phases". originally he was "edgy" , then emo,,, and back to edgy. but more modern.
i really actually love his older designs, i'm not ashamed of them. he is my child after all.

SO SORRY FOR MAKING THIS SO LONG-- its like a biography tbh,, but i was intrigued, so thank you a LOT if you read all of it ily.
i will leave now,, bye

I'm honestly fairly satisfied with the way dragon boys turned out. In the case of TYPE A, I think he's almost entirely what I wanted him to be. However, the update I have planned (it's fairly large) is going to change a lot about him and it may cause him not to be very well received. The ideas design wise for this update may change last second if I lose my confidence.

Go for it! I'm excited to see what you will do! Don't let other humans keep you from doing something you want to! :D

I am currently working on losing my sanity err I mean recording a arpasing bank for him (would've chose vccv but it's so much harder to record)
vccv imo is easier to record, but that could just because i'm a huuuge vccv master race person.
it's the otoing that sucks.

but arpasing is good too!

I heard arpasing is quicker but I would have to try both to see but, I'm already scared of going to my computer due to how hard arpasing is so there is no way I have the mental strength to record a vccv too ;A;

like i said, arpasing is just as good. do what you feel works for you. just because vccv works for me doesn't mean i expect it from everyone else!
