Hello, I was wondering if when we buy a vocaloid, we can use the vocaloid in commercial songs ? because the licence is a bit confusing because of the "character" part of the page that seems to not allow to use them in commercial songs without having to go through the process of being approved manually by them, unless I'm misunderstanding something

Crypton Vocaloids’ voice can be used for commercial use. So, you can sell albums that used their voices for example.

However, you cannot use their character, visual avatar, to make mass produced goods and sell them. For that you need their permission.

Most of other companies Vocaloids follow these rules as well expect some expectations: fukase. To even sell albums that used Vocaloid fukase, you need his company’s permission.

Each Vocaloid’s TOS can differ slightly, so I suggest reading it before make purchase (especially if you’re producer) but generally speaking you can use their voices as you like (as long as not illegal of course) but their character usage is often limited that you can’t use them commercially.

I see, so I could use the voice and sell songs made with it, but couldn't use the character
but what about the name ? Can I say that the song is featuring Kagamine Rin's voice or the whole name must be banned from all commercial work containing it ?

You can use the characters name and image in, for example, song production and selling it. However what they wanna get is all of the bootleg merchandise, that's what is prohibited if that makes sense. So as long as youre not going to mass produce merch you are fine and can sell songs as you like.

I see, thanks for the explaination

They should probably make a kind of Q & A that would make it easier for newcomers to not be confused

After looking at the wikia page for IA for something else, I noticed something when it was talking about the fact that IA allows the use of her image on commercial albums

"This is a departure from past VOCALOIDs such as Crypton Future Media, who require you to ask permission for use of their VOCALOIDs' images on things such as CDs, flyers and posters."

So it means that if I make a song with Rin and want for instance to make a cd with her character/name on it, I'd have to contact crypton
