How do you feel about derivatives?

There are a lot of derivatives out there, both using Vocaloids and Utaus. Some have even been recognized by the voice bank producer companies. Also Ted (Teto’s genderbent/older brother) is an official member of the Vipperloid family. But not all derivatives are good in my opinion. Some times they seem a bit lazy and uninspired. If you look at the fanaloid (fanoloid?) wiki there are so many derivatives that are just recolors. Also there a lot of them that have the same voice. Like a lot of Miku pitch change derivatives. I might try making a derivative some day. I believe that derivatives such as Haku, Neru, and even Keko are good derivatives because they are actually unique and thought was actually put into them. I enjoy and respect those kind of derivatives. But if you just recolor Miku and change the pitch of her voice then I just see that as lazy and not very ineresting. There was one derivative I saw kind of recently who was basically a fusion of Rin and Luka. It was pretty cool and that’s the kind of creativity in derivatives I’d like to see.

Isn't Kasane Keko just green/white Teto?

Anyway, I kinda like derivatives honestly. While some of them definitely don't have much thought put into them surely there are others that do and some of them can be really cool. I'm a little on the fence at the same time because if you're going to put time and effort into a character wouldn't it be so much cooler to have that character be your own? With its own voicebank and all.

At first glance Keko is just a Teto recolor but originally her outfit was different. She has a tie, different shoes, a play button on her back, and even slightly longer hair. Plus her voice is actually a modified version of Len. Her creator referred to her as a Vocatau or something similar to that. She is supposed to be Teto’s sister. But sadly someone (not her creator) decided to make an illegal mmd model of her. They basically took a Teto model that wasn’t supposed to edited and redistributed and they did just that to make a Keko model. Sadly after that people just always associated Keko with that situation so her creator abandoned her. She still has some fans but never got as popular as she could have.

* I think it depends if the derivative is from an established character(within permission) or the voice/samples. Because while their may be the original, source, I view it as further experimenting in what can be done with the voice if not disrespecting ToS. I personally find derivatives charmings at times and can add more layers.
