VCV Confusion

Hi there,

New member here, and semi-new to VCV.

To start off, I have created a number of CV voice banks in the past, and my own UTAU celebrates her 4th birthday pretty soon. But as expected, I wanted to try some new recording techniques, and I have always been interested in how a VCV voice worked exactly. So ... I tried it myself, but by doing so I just ... stumble from confusion upon confusion upon confusion.

After following a number of tutorials on oto-ing, I think I figured out the basics of how it is done. Aliassing went fine, with some exceptions on single consonants, which I still don't understand, or vowels -R ..

However, my main issue is the sound itself. For the most part, the VCV voice bank skips about 96% of any VCV UST I tried. And the few notes she does sing, sound garbled at best, or it skips a part of the note all together.

(a ba, for example, she'll only sing the a part)

Which made me think it was an oto-related issue.. However, a friend of mine did her own version of oto-edits on the same voice bank, and though she reads more notes, that version also sounds garbled at best.

I re-recorded the same reclist (which combines lite- basic and advanced, which the original 2 VCV voice banks followed as well), and tho I have only done about 5% of the oto on that voice bank, it also sounds garbled.

I think my oto-edits might be off, cuz the aliasses are copied from Matsudappoiyo, so I doubt that's the issue.
small note: Even Matsudappoiyo's voice bank struggles with certain USTs .. which surprised me.

I'll include some images of the voice bank itself, so you can have a look for yourselves.

Now, I didn't localize my laptop, which has never been an issue before. But if it is, please do let me know how to change the settings.

All by all, I am very confused, as I've reached out for help elsewhere, but I haven't gotten a difinitive explanation or form of help all together.

Can anyone clear some things out? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Looking at the oto numbers I can see that it might be a tad off in places like the sample selected in the 2nd image, though I can't say for certain in the other samples.

I can't say if the main problem is due to the oto, but make sure that when you open a ust file you clear the ust from any preset oto configurations. to do this, select all notes then right-click and select region property and do the following; hit the clear button, and clear out the STP box (if you can't find it click on the blue text "Details"), you can also set the modulation to 0. After this hit ok and then go to the upper right corner of the utau piano roll window. There you want to press the reset button and one of the P2P3/P3P4 buttons as they apply the oto configurations of the voicebank selected onto the notes. ACPT from what I know, simply save those configurations to the ust.

If there are still issues with some notes not playing see if they have a suffix, as a fair amount of VCV ust files comes with them. They normally look like simple letters/symbols attached at the end of the note lyric (a かS, for example). They're commonly used to switch between different voicebanks, like a whisper or a specific pitch in a multi-pitch. So when there's a voicebank being used that doesn't have those, it will not be read as it lacks samples with those aliases.

When working with VCV I highly recommend setting the system locale to Japanese, as it makes it much easier to read and spot suffixes on the notes.
Knowing what type of operating system you are using is needed to explain how to go about changing the system locale. Hope this helps:wink:!

That actually helped a lot, but she still skips a few.
When you mentioned the numbers to be a tad off, what did you refer to exactly?

If it is indeed an oto-related issue, this might be easily fixed ^^
I have found certain aliasses that are unknown to me, that I cannot find in my voice bank either.

And I work with windows 10, 64 bit

With the number being a tad off I was referring to the "e あ" sample in the second picture, the overlap value is usually 1/3 of the utterance. Most people use 300 preutterance & 100 overlap in their settings. Besides that, the position of the preutterance in the file seems close if not correct.

I don't remember how to do it on windows 10 as I have 8.1 and my system language isn't in English. But I did a little bit of searching and found this.
Keep in mind you might have to change the decimal setting on the number formats tab from a comma to a period, but that's only if you're on a European computer.

Hmm, does that go for every file (the 300 pre, 100 ovla) ? I might give that one a go then.
You have been super helpful so far, thank you so much. c:

And yes, I am European, hehe..

A large amount of VCV banks use that for every sample. Though I have seen deviations in some but they were minor changes.

Have you changed your computer's locale for non-Unicode programs to Japanese? This is usually what causes the aliases to get corrupted as seen in your screenshots and it causes a lot of issues with UTAU in general.

To find how to change it, you can Google "*your OS* change locale", eg "Windows 10 change locale". Be sure its your locale for non-Unicode programs that you change, as many people get it confused with keyboard settings, system language, region, and clock format.

Once you've changed it, you'll have to delete/uninstall UTAU, redownload it, and reinstall it. You can backup your voicebanks and USTs and anything else UTAU related, but any of your oto's that have already been corrupted by UTAU with the incorrect locale are likely just going to have to be manually fixed.
