I need some help learning to oto.

Okay, so here is the deal. It's been three years since I joined this fandom, and I still can't make a decent oto.ini from scratch.

I've been directed to tutorials, and also had somebody do Mayo's Act 2 oto.ini so I could compare and try to see what I'm doing wrong, but both methods have ultimately failed to help me.

So, I was wondering if someone could take a look at Mayo's oto and tell me what exactly I'm doing wrong? I'd especially appreciate it if you took screenshots.

If you don't mind, I'd also prefer that you take a look at my horrible Act 1 VB, since that's the only one I did 100% by myself. Act 2 is also okay, but since that was made with some help, it doesn't accurately show how bad I am at this.

Act 1 is here.

Just quickly: Red goes after the consonant, Green goes within the consonant and drag the Pink to cover more of the vowel.

These basics you need in your voicebank and they're missing or off in your Act 1.

Someone will probably kindly lend you some tutorials on more finetune otoing techniques for the different types of samples and the vowels which can have their own otoing system depending on who you talk to.

I've found that this (possibly outdated) quick guide by halo helps: http://heroofbagels.tumblr.com/post/22832658011/it-came-to-my-attention-that-new-utau-users-really

Whoops, a small correction. Green goes in front of consonant, right where it starts. Winkwonk.
On hard consonants, leave a space after the green and before the k/t/p, and if possible make every overlap value the same (eg every green line is at 40ms).
But yeah, otherwise, just make sure the red line is after the consonant and where the vowel starts. That's the important bit.

A slightly advanced thing that I think makes CV banks sound even better is negative envelopes.

When you sing/speak, there are some consonants that your voice stops before pronouncing. Record yourself saying "tatters" - zoom in and there's a gap between the "ta" and "ter". Consonants that do this in a Japanese bank are T, D, G, K, TS, P, B, and CH (Though with CH I sometimes don't do it).

Now, to imitate the natural gap that occurs in speaking/singing (and in VCV), you make a negative envelope. To do this, make sure your offset is set to where there's no gap before the note starting. Now, depending on what you like, in the oto settings make those consonants have an Overlap of between -10 and -20 (I generally do something like -16). That'll make the green line BEFORE the note! And when adjusting a UST to a bank, voila - the envelope of the last note slopes off into a silence right before the consonant that has a natural gap!

Sorry if I overcomplicated this. It's just something I think more banks should have because it really helps emphasize those hard consonants and it's more realistic.

If you need screenshots I'll be happy to make some.

Wait, Shinami.
Negative overlap causes a more metallic sound-- if you have enough space in front of the sample, leave the same amount of positive space in front of the k/t/p as you would put negative overlap.
I'll draw a graph in a second, but this really sounds a lot less... fake. Negative overlap's sort of a Plan B for when you don't leave space in front of your samples. And this way, all the overlaps stay in the same place and prevent glitches, too.
