Hi! I noticed that it seems everyone is looking for free...well...anything.

So to start, I will be reviewing a bunch of video editors (on request too!) and comparing them to find one for everyones needs!

Test Platform:
Windows 8.1 x64
AMD A6 APU 4.0Ghz
8GB 1300Mhz ram

What I test for:
functionality
text editing
video clipping/splitting
basic audio mixing functionality
method of timing (such as a time line)

1.VLMC
A neat looking editor but with a lot to be desired- unless you download the 2.0 test build it won't even run, it will crash immediately...(oh dear)
now...what to say about it...
well- not much, it can import almost any format I trow at it but it just doesn't cut it-

editing is very early and don't expect to know what your doing, you will be editing blindly and as soon as you try to edit the preview doesn't work at all...
A great idea at fist...but the lack of follow through makes it just a UI with no features.

2.LightWorks Free
Oh ho ho- this looks a bit fun, it is huge and resource intensive though.

You CANNOT edit AVI or MPG (mp4/mpeg) files and video files at the same time. Your video content has to be converted to quicktime before you can do anything (a pain to some but not to me)

Unlike the old versions, the new version prompts you with a few dialogs to get the project set up.
it's quick that's sure.
I chose 780p@30fps to test my project.

Importing some files was near instantaneous...but some...I don't know what it's doing...re-encoding the video?
it takes a minute and usually means your video isn't going to work.

Now about editing...I can't- I started but I can't seem to delete items from tracks, or move them around...everything feels stiff and the theme makes some things jarring...
Can't find the search tool to bring my media back up

*RESTARTS PROJECT*

nevermind! the search tool also doubles as the FIND EVERYTHING IF YOU CLOSE I OMG WHERE DID IT ALL GO button.

okay back to work.
...I broke it...It was just working and then I slid my video track...
it seems to have clipped all the tracks away...uhh...
OH! I stretched out a muted section before the actual clip...

OKAY the cursor icon changes to show what your doing and thin lines shift when you do stuff...k...I got it now!
Once you get going this thing is pretty good!

I haven't been able to do much yet though...EFFECTS! yes...ah man...
I CAN'T EVEN DO TEXT! you have to pay for that!
I have to create an image in gimp with some...

I think I'm done with this...I'll mess later! gawd-
I'll be happy when it finally goes open source it's supposed too...it probably never will though...

2.5**.LightWorks BETA 11.5.f
just filled out the form an am looking at it now...
the theme is more pleasent and tasks are much easier to see...I say you should download it before it is out of beta!
The editing controls were moved and for the better and things are faster too!
I can now add text so that's a plus...okay I say try it...

3.VSDC
hmm...almost looks like glorified Windows Movie Maker...let's try it out...
*imports video file*
gets stuck...
let's try a different format...heh...OH WAIT
I have to draw the file onto the layer and size it...
(kind of like sony vegas)
...now how do I review...
nope...

This tool isn't very good for the average user...lets try another!

err- wait- wait what is this...ADDON CRAP! It didn't even mention extra software during the installation!
This software is a class B - OH HELL NAH!

4.Debugmode WAX
oh ... it's like Sony Vegas's fair skinned cousin...let's tear it to bits!
I remember trying this software out a few years ago
(I've been playing with utau for 4...ah...memories...used to not be lazy...could pump out a CV a day and a CVVC in 2)
I didn't like it then...lets try it again!

The freeframe plugin support is near useless...no one makes them much anymore and all the good ones are gone...
it needs virtual dub for certain things...just a note...

well...I haven't been able to get it work then...still doesn't work now...uhg...

5.Resolume
haven't looked at it yet...oh at a time

6.VideoSpin
This this has been long discontinued...lets pull it from it's grave!

The first thing it did was load my ASIO driver (ASIO4ALL)
So I had to set that up and restart the app...

It's just a step up from WMM...worth a shot for quick things but not worth it if you want to do more complex things...it's pretty oky though!

7.VideoPad
I like this one...things are right there and the timeline is nice-
you can only have 1 video and 1 audio track (with a few sub tracks for "mixing")
You can't overlap things generally...only sequential editing for the most part...
I could also add text which was nice...
I MAY crash at times so save often!

Oh okay ^^ I've installed Lightworks once when I was in 2nd year HS and I didn't bother looking through tutorial on how to use this and that so I didn't use it much.. And it always crash -,- So in the end I uninstalled it.

I keep feeling like Windows Live Movie Maker will come out on top still. Unless one of these is actually better while also a stable program?

I haven't had the patience to learn it myself so It seems silly to ask, but what about Blender's Video editing View, have you given that a shot yet?

I want to try it out but I haven't found a good tutorial/help file on it
