So, I ordered the Mac VOCALOID Editor for Cubase and it should be getting here next week sometime.

So while I'm waiting, I was wondering if you guys could enlighten me on what all the options at the bottom of the editor do (BRI, GEN etc [I actually know what those are they are the only ones I could think of though])

And also maybe some tips on tuning and VSQx making!

Any help is appreciated!!

There is a user manual that comes should be included when you install the editor. That might be a good first stop but there's always tutorial videos to help explain things. And as far as tuning tips just use your ear to keep the voice in pitch. If you have good ears you'll be able to tell if a tone doesn't sound right.

Mess around with the parameters so you understand what they do and how they affect the voice.

You kinda have to treat it like a virtual instrument to really get the sound you're after. Hope this helps.

In VOCALOID3, you have these parameters.

I can help explain all of them except VEL and POR.

DYN - Stands for Dynamics. It affects the volume of a note or a set of notes.

BRE - Stands for Breathiness. It affects the breathiness of a vocal. Playing with it can make a Vocaloid sound scratchy.

BRI - Stands for Brightness. I'm not entirely sure what it does, but I do know it can help make vocals louder.

CLE - Stands for Clearness. It can help make a vocal sound less muffled.

OPE - Stands for Opening. It changes the pronunciation something, mainly vowels. It's very similar to saying "oh" with your mouth slightly open, then opening it up very wide and saying "oh". It just changes the quality, in a way.

GEN - Stands for Gender Factor. Playing with this parameter can make a Vocaloid sound more feminine or more masculine depending on what you do with it.

PIT - Stands for Pitch. Messing with this can help tune a song... or make it sound awful. It just depends.

PBS - Stands for Pitch Bend Sensitivity. Playing with this affects how sensitive the PIT parameter is. If you play with PBS and then go to PIT, even the slightest curve may sound crazy.

Hope this helps!

I can help explain all of them except VEL and POR.

VEL (Velocity) has to deal with how fast a syllable is sung. I think typically this is used for consonants to get them to sound clearer and better spaced in relation to the vowel and other notes.

POR (Portamento) is basically the VOCALOID version of a glide from the end of one note to the beginning of another. Like if you were to start the slider of a trombone at like a C note and pulled the slider in to go up to D. It's just a curve from one note to the next.

Portamento can be used to make the notes flow more into one another.

Ease of tuning depends on what VOCALOID you are using and the particular user. Just play with the params until you find a voice you like. Here are a few suggestions:

Turn up the brightness on long notes. It will give them more power and make them stronger.

I usually leave VEL, DYN, OPE, PBS and POR alone. I don't make VSQXs though...

I usually leave BRE alone too, but that's because I prefer the bank to sound clear. It can help with whispery or soft songs though!

I usually put my brightness up and then slighly slope it downwards as a note goes on, just to make the voice a little more realistic.

Play with CLE, I usually like it from 60-80 depending on who I'm using. It can make the voice sound crackly on LQ computers though, so be careful.

GEN is one of my favorites. Up is more masculine, and lower is higher pitched. Play with it depending on the sound you want. I usually only use it for AVANNA though.

PIT is the most important in my opinion. It lets you control pitch. If you want it to sound like crying, for example, add a lot of small, short waves.

I've never really played with BRI. I kind of want to try what you do with it, like, with long notes.
