(Mandarin) Chinese pronunciation guide & tips~ - (Mandarin) Chinese pronunciation guide & tips~

Hello everyone !

So, after having posted some tips in the thread, and got told to turn it into a tutorial, I've decided to follow this advice and making it ~

Recently, due to obvious context and also, the arrival of Chinese Vocaloids a few years ago, people started to try Mandarin voicebanks, making the very old ones existing directly and the new more popular~

You want to make a Chinese-capable singing UTAUloid ? But you don't know how to pronounce it or have no clue at all ?...

this is a pretty good tutorial! but something is weird - I hate to necropost but I don't think I've ever heard the "r" sound in chinese pronounced as a "j"? I'm chinese and my family speaks mandarin, and I've only ever heard it pronounced basically the same as in english, maybe a little softer. do you have examples of it sounding like that...?

tips for vowels -
"e" is like the vowel in "eugh".
"o" is like the vowel in "more" or "all" - but only in a boston accent. (brooklyn and new jersey probably work too)

Well, for the R it was how we were taught (one of my teachers being a Native speaker from Beijing and then a teacher from here but knowing what she was doing)

wikipedia says it can be pronounced both ways:

In syllable-initial position, pronounced by some speakers as [ɻ] (a retroflex approximant, similar to initial "r" in some English varieties), and by some as [ʐ] (a Voiced retroflex sibilant, closer to the middle consonant sound of "vision")

weird @_@ I've never heard that before. plus when I look up pronunciation guides it says to say it like you said but the audio is of an english "r" sound... this is really strange.

Yep =S Honestly I always went with the French J-like/English s in pleasure-like retroflex sound
