My first UTAU was very short-lived as the laptop it was on died and I couldn't recover any of the files. It wasn't anything amazing (in fact, it was horrible) but I was really excited to have done it and be able to use it. OTOs seemed hard (even though a CV bank OTO seems like CAKE to me now) but I tried really really hard and looked up tutorials to try and do my best.

1. Kind of awesome, even though in hindsight it was rather terrible in quality.
2. Yeah
3. Not really
4. Well, it sounded a little like me at the time.
5. Honestly I was just so happy to finally get to program to work [I had a lot of technical difficulties] that I didn't care too much.
6. Not too hard; I make OCs all the time.
7. I didn't even know what OTOing was lol. One I figured it out, it wasn't terribly difficult.
8. My first several attempts were unsuccessful because my computer was so out of date that the software didn't run properly.
9. I've improved in like, EVERYTHING.
10. My friend Bunny gave me some tips, but mostly I just learned from experimentation and internet tutorials.

BONUS: here is the very first thing I ever made in the software http://tindeck.com/listen/pdnh

Fun thread!

Wellll my very first one it was exciting but it didn't really live up to what I had heard (then again at that point I can't recall if even Teto VCV had happened yet?). My second bank I was a lot more pleased with even if it didn't have otos or anything. My first VCV bank I was immensely proud as it was one of the first VCV banks in Overseas with proper otos and while the pronunciation wasn't great it was gloriously smooth. Now, with my current UTAUs and improvements in technique, I'm very proud of what I've made and how far I've come.

None of my UTAUs really sound like me to be honest. Maybe my first ever attempt, but my next two voicebanks that became actual ones were voiceacted and my third one, Leil, kinda sounds like me but not really? None really do. Maybe when I try multipitch. It's interesting though how some will sound like their voicers and others won't at all like mine.

In terms of design, ugh man I'm so glad the UTAU community has grown up. EVERYONE had to do a design that looked like a Crypton Vocaloid back in the day. My first UTAU had the stupid Miku sleeves (though her design was salvagable by taking off the way too many parts and simplifying it) and my second had the belt though little else, I suppose I had some sense. With the third I just went with design ideas I found I liked and how I liked to draw people.

OTOs are an interesting point with me - I have always been garbage at CV, back then they were kinda passable but nowadays no. But upon studying VCV it clicked. VCV is super easy, just really tedious to me and I can do any standardized OTO style in an instant (anything where the parameters are consistent). UTAU only really glitched out when I didn't have locale, afterwards it was fine. Though UTAU-Synth, the Mac version, is another thing...ugh

I hope I don't have to touch on improvement as I did so throughout this! XD But I've also improved in art, not as much as the rest of the older community though I'd admit because they actually draw more frequently. everyone grows up so fast ; w ;

EDIT: EndIsNear made a fun edit, how about we post our very first ever UTAU thing and latest, as referring to our own banks? Progression is so facinating to see!

First:
Latest:
Yes it's an old upload but reflects my average skills and my latest voicebank, I've been gone for over a year. :'D

I wish I could... I don't have either of the maybe two songs I managed to cover with my original Vocaloid. I did Toeto and Meltdown for my very first two, but I don't think they were ever uploaded anywhere...

・Were you amazed?
I was excited about it haha orz and I'm pretty sure Halo got annoyed with me about it XD
・Disappointed?
Not really I saw potential with her. At the time I had Halo helping me with learning.
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
Hixai was the first bank I voiced. She sounded like a deeper me with the first bank. Later on and with my own research and development I made her sound almost carbon copy. She is now discontinued and her carbon copy feel will never be heard in UTAU.
・Was coming up with a design hard?
Her design existed before the voice bank. It wasn't hard she's been a character for me since 2003
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
Well my first OTO wasn't actually done by me but halo. Nowadays I find them a little challenge but I have created my own RECLIST's so its more fun to experiment nowadays
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
OH I had like a whole bank I made flag once because I forgot to name something correctly?
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
Art is pretty much same same. OTOing is easier I have never really thought about it.
・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
Halo helped me so much <3 She is amazing as a friend and I'm glad I actually got introduced to UTAU

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
... It was weird...

・Were you amazed?
I got really emotional.

・Disappointed?
Nah.

・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
They sounded pretty much exactly like I do, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

・If yes, how did that make you feel?
Kinda... neat. Really neat, actually.

・Was coming up with a design hard?
Nope.

・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
HARD. I can OTO CVVC and VCV easily, but I'm always honestly a bit unsure about the CV part of CVVC...

・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
I didn't... but I also never did most of those things for a long time.

・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
My UTAU didn't have a design for a long time, so I can't say I've improved my art since I drew the design... ((like last month, w))... but OTOing, oh yes. The first OTO tut I ever found was one that had the overlap and preutterance lines reverse, so I OTOed my first bank like that since I didn't know any better.

・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
No. Not at all.

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
I don't remember, but I was probably glad that I got the bank to actually work?
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
My first voicebank was recorded in the middle of the night (More like 9pm but still late) so she sounded like me, but extremely whispery.
・If yes, how did that make you feel?
I dunno.
・Was coming up with a design hard?
I had an OC that showed up in the first few paragraphs of a bad Zelda fanfiction, and went to my own original fantasy world based on Eragon. I decided that she would have a duality because of some magic event, so there was the white and yellow theme, and the black and purple theme. I used to be into fantasy...
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
I didn't know what they were. Acceptable problem. I eventually found tutorials.
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
I don't know?? That was like four years ago....
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
So so so so so many ways, too many to list them all.
・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
Not really. From Fall 2011 to Summer 2012, I was pretty much completely independent. But Spring 2012 was when I scrapped my first UTAU and started working on my current main one, Mita Souzou. By the time I actually joined the community proper, I was making improvements by leaps and bounds.

Well, I made my first bank back in 2013 but that one is looong gone and made my second one in 2014 (acturally just found that one ) which is CV and horrible.

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
it was weird to have a singing computer
・Were you amazed?
yes
・Disappointed?
not really
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
definitely
・If yes, how did that make you feel?
i dunno
・If no, how did that make you feel?
・Was coming up with a design hard?
not really (it was very simple)
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
at the time i didn't know what a oto was
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
not have an oto
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
I improved on pretty much everything

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
Wow, it was AMAZING. I felt like I did the best UTAU ever!! Hahah ^^
・Were you amazed?
For SURE!! XD
・Disappointed?
Nope. Just when I got my first critiques. I went on a hiatus of covers and started to work on a next voicebank. Nowadays I can't stand my old voicebank anymore. XD
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
Of course not. ^^ I used my falsetto. And I used a bad quality mic. It sounded like a crap and had some pops.
・If yes, how did that make you feel?
404 answer not found for that one XD
・If no, how did that make you feel?
Well, it was not supposed to sound like me. Then I was good about that. But it for sure sounded a lot different then how my falsetto really sound like. Yeah, that made me feel a bit "how is that possible?" but then I was okay. I was really enjoying how it sounded like.
・Was coming up with a design hard?
I did my first designs by myself. They were not very good.
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
My first OTO I didn't understand anything about that. I went to a tutorial whose presenter was not really teaching what everything was there for. It was just throwing numbers at me. Then I used that numbers. Well, as you can imagine, thos numbers weren't good enough for my voice...
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
Hmm.... I did. Some frequencies were weird and I didn't even know I couldn't imagine I could fix that. Then I let that be like that. Nowadays I'd kill myself for that!! XD
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
Now I really know whatevery part of the OTO mean. I know I can make a good work on OTO. I'm really confident about that. In art I really improved a lot since then. I changed a lot my artwork.
・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
When I did my first UTAU no one came at me to give me some help. I was absolutely alone. But for my next voicebanks I had some tips from newer friends, I paid attention to the critiques people were giving to me and I had a task to myself: ACCOMPLISH AT LEAST ONE JAPANESE CV UTAU!! >:3

What was is like to hear your first UTAU sing?
Loud, My UTAU nearly killed my ears the first time I rendered him >.<
( I quickly learned to lower the volume )
Were you amazed?
Not really, I was somewhat disappointed, and in pain ( Loud Noise )
Disappointed?
I was disappointed it didn't sound good on the first time, I thought he would sound exactly like me,
Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
He actually sounded nothing like me, he sounded like a child. He still sounds like a kid...
If no, how did that make you feel?
Kinda wierd. I thought it was really unusual that it didn't sound like me, or that he sounded a lot younger
Was coming up with a design hard?
It only took me a hour, His design hasn't changed at all either, just drawn a lot better.
What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
Hard, even when I was doing them incorrectly :_: ( Thankfully I do them correctly now )
Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
Not really. Do people normally encounter this?
How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
I really hope so! ^_^' The artworks certainly better, and the voicebank sounds a lot better ( At least to me )
Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
Nope! I did it all by myself! I'm a big boy :D

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
Falsetto Makearu's first attempt sounded. . .really good, actually, for a first attempt; the CV was smooth, with consonants crisp (at least to me), and the VCV, while a little broken-ish, blended smoothly.
・Were you amazed?
I was amazed, mostly for the fact that I just created my first voicebank and it sounded good.
・Disappointed?
I was, however, disappointed with my lack of knowledge on OTO-ing, as presented when I actually put in more than one note.
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
The monopitch voicebank was similar to me so long as it stayed within the range C2-D5, but the higher it got, the more it began to sound slightly more feminine and wheezy, which I disliked; that was actually how I came up with the name Falsetto Makearu, since the Kanji 負或ファルセット can be interpreted as 'Disliked one's Falsetto'.
・If yes/no, how did that make you feel?
Meh. It bothered me in the beginning, but later on I began to like it.
・Was coming up with a design hard?
Not really; I actually based the design on a previous sketch of myself, and, therefore, based the design on myself, though with a few things added, such as the jointed mannequin hands and the mannequin joints in the shoulders.
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
Flurbighinurj, etco.

. . .That translates to 'Frustrating in the beginning, simple now'.
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
The End User License Agreement. hhhhhhhhhhnggggg-
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
Apart from OTO-ing better, I haven't really improved; but hey, that's why I joined this forum!
・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.)
I learned the OTO-ing by myself through experimentation and looked at tutorials later on, but a person named Liza helped me finalize the art for Falsetto. Go see her at http://lolface1.deviantart.com/

What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
I never really understood UTAU at first, so I never played with a UST or anything like that. More like I always made random combinations of sounds on different notes and I felt just so accomplished. I started back in 2011-2012 I think, when CV was all over, so I didn't think 'wow, time to make a tri-pitch VCV!' It was more like, 'wow, I was able to do this, what else could I do?' That really opened a lot of other doors for me.
Were you amazed?
Certainly, especially with the fact that I was such a weeb obsessed with Vocaloid. The possibilities were endless, infinite even, to me. As I said before, I felt accomplished. I think my thoughts were like 'I was able to record my voice, put some settings, and manipulate it in this program and make it sing without me needing to sing!" Nothing could honestly describe the feelings I got when I first fully used the program. It was super fun to mess around with.
Disappointed?
Slightly. I knew that it wasn't as nice as I would've liked it to be, but I liked it.
Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
No.
・If no, how did that make you feel?
Well, I made my voice incredibly deep for reasons unknown (I think it was because when I initially recorded, I felt that I sounded like a girl), so it sounded nothing like me.
Was coming up with a design hard?
Well, I was never that good at making designs then or now.
What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
I've actually never understood OTOs until a year and a half ago, I think. That's when I started playing with UTAU a bit more than just plug-n-play USTs.
Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
I had like seven samples that were super weirdly pitchy, for some reason. Resamplers hated it. And it wasn't fun.
How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
Art: I don't use MS Paint anymore, the legs aren't the size of the head, the necks aren't unnaturally long anymore, and I can draw hands! And I have a tablet that I can use!
OTO: Long story short-0 to 100 real quick
Basic Usage: I now understand pitchbends and envelopes.
Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
...Barely. None of my real life friends got any interest and I restricted myself from trying to reach out on the internet too much at the time.

It's kinda weird to say, but my experiences with UTAU have helped me (?) evolve as a person because now I love music and if I didn't start drawing my UTAU, I would've been such a terrible drawer.

Oh boy the beginning days of when I first heard of UTAU. This should be nostalgic.

・What was is like to hear your first UTAU ((or multiple first UTAU voices)) sing?
Well, I kinda jumped right into UTAU as soon as I knew what it was and that you could make your own voicebank. So when I finished and heard it sing I was so fascinated.
・Were you amazed?
Most definitely. It was new and exciting for me and I loved it so much.
・Disappointed?
At the time, no I absolutely was not. If I were to hear my very first cover with my CV bank today I'd probably cringe.
・Do you think your first UTAU sounded similar to you?
My first one sounded exactly like me because I never thought about voice acting. My immediate second one after I scrapped that one had a much higher pitch that I voice acted.
・If yes, how did that make you feel?
It was so weird, but pretty cool. I literally sat there thinking, " Omg, I'm a singing robot."
・If no, how did that make you feel?
Skip:P
・Was coming up with a design hard?
For my first I quickly created something with a base and ms paint that was basically a mixture of how I looked, miku+rin's design's attributes, boots, and I made her a neko. (Yes, oh yes, it was that bad) From then one I traced drawings I made IRL in SAI and had someone else color the lineart if anyone was willing to help.
・What about making OTOs? Was that easy or hard?
Once I learned what they were it came to me rather easily. Like, I'm not the best at it but my bank weren't necessarily low quality once I learned from my very first voicebank.
・Did you encounter any problems ((picture not showing up, trouble making a readme, weird FRQs, ect.)) then?
I had trouble with all of that once I decided to add that and actually release voicebanks that I made. I looked EVERYWHERE for tutorials on how people did that and once I found one it was a piece of cake.
・How have you improved since your first time? ((Art, OTO, ect.))
I would like to say I'm much better at OTO and a little better at art in terms of design and making lineart. Colors are something I've always struggled with, though.
・Did anyone help you with your UTAU? ((Help you learn to OTO, draw art, ect.))
I self-taught myself how to OTO once I watched a couple of tutorials on CV and VCV otoing. The only help I really had to get was for coloring my art. I suck at coloring ... I'm still learning.

2nd voicebank I ever made (earliest work I have.)

my current bank singing the same song (i really love(d) this song)
