If/when/how did you introduce your friends or family to Utau?

Just curious as to how some of you introduced Utau, your liking of it, and maybe your creations with it, to a friend or family member, if you ever had. Vocal synthesis can be a very alien topic to people outside the fandom, especially older folk.

I'll start with myself. Nobody really knows about my liking of Utau (except those on the Internet of course), it's been kept private. Of course if somebody asks I would be open, but I usually have nothing that anybody would get curious as to what that is (no music out loud, t-shirts, etc).

Lol, my kids love utau/vocaloid. My friends refer to it as "that chinese shit" so yeah, i make them listen anyway.

I remember I was still using my old Mac and I was so excited that I got UTAU-Synth to download correctly for once, so I downloaded my friend's UTAU Volante and went up to my dad and said "Look dad, I can make computers sing!"

I was like 12 at the time I think lol

My family tends to ask me "What are you doing?" And I'm doing UTAU, making a game or writing fanfic, so if I'm doing UTAU, I'm like "Making and creating singing robots." And then I may explain more from there.

With my family? I downloaded it, my family was like "whaaaat?" and then were like "okay whatever".

They have no interest but also respect my interest in the software as a hobby. (Though my mother had once asked to make one at one point)

I've bugged my family a few times about recording voicebanks, even got my youngest sister to make an english one (but no others). They get how it works- I put in my samples, and then I can make them sing and use it in songs. My parents seem to think every vocal synth is made from my voice, though. (Even sonika.)

I met my friend out of utau. My other friends wanted to learn how to make their own voicebank but they don't have a decent mic.
My sister know what utau is. She bugged me to make her voicebank but she didn't have the time. As for my parents, I'd rather not bug them into this sort of thing because they're too busy with work.

My family learnt of it pretty immediately because it's hard to not pay attention to your child producing strange Japanese chants from their room. It was promptly encouraged too! Because my dad likes to encourage our strange hobbies. It was nice.

My parents aren't very computer savvy and don't like most modern music anyway (aka, anything beyond the 60's/70's). They know I have a synthesized voice, but other than that it's just 'Oh boy, another Asian thing...' I did play samples of Yohioloid's English demos and Gumi English around them. I don't think they know that those are also synthesized voices. When I showed my mom the Michael Jackson based UTAU she said she found it creepy. *shrugs* As far as they're concerned, it's just another weird hobby I'm into like Kpop or other languages in general that they can't understand and they tolerate it cause I've been into UTAU for 2 years now.

Well, I've been into Vocaloid since 2010, and Utau probably a year or two later(?). I don't remember when or how I notified my family, but I am completely open about it. I have four shirts, quite a few dolls and figures, a wallet, some keychains, and a lot more. I like to wear my fandoms loud and proud! Unfortunately, the only people I've ever been able to share my interest with are my sister, some guy I'm kind of friends with at school, and my internet friends. Sometimes I just wish Voca/Utau fans would be dropped in a room together for a day so we could all finally have a nice group of people to share our interest(s) with! Of course, it wouldn't happen, but I think it'd be nice for a day or so. :p

My little sibling, Generic, got into Vocaloid/UTAU at the same time as me (we're extremely close haha), and I actually only started with UTAU because I thought their voice would make a good UTAU. Then I realized that I didn't have to be able to sing and have vocal training (which Generic can and does) to make one, so I thought hey, why not also make one myself? And that's how Halt and Soledi were initially recorded on the same night.

I've shown my parents English work and originals here and there, but they mostly just figure it's something weird I'm up to. Which is fine, that's generally how they feel about my hobbies. I've had various friends find UTAU interesting for various reasons over the years -- two of my roommates even recorded voicebanks, though only one of those was released, and then only because it was an English bank... both had some major quality issues. But the other of said roommates thought that UTAU was really interesting from a linguistics perspective (she was a linguistics major), so we had a lot of cool conversations about phonetics and stuff! But yeah, I tend to take whatever opportunity to show people UTAU work, just because I think it's cool so maybe they will to, though I don't force the matter.

When I got into Vocaloid, I got into UTAU soon after.
My brother still considers Teto a Vocaloid. We are, however, working together on the Kiseki Noke project.
My grandma supports me making voicebanks, but every time I play something made with IA, she says,"Is that you?" I'm just like,"No, this is IA. She's a Vocaloid."
My dad gets really annoyed by it.
My grandpa could care less.
My cousin once wanted a voicebank, but we goofed around too much and we never finished recording her.(RIP Kitsune Amai)
My friends Tiffany and Crystal(they're twins) are interested in voicing my twin UTAUs, Nekomimi Nyansei and Melody.

My sister was the one who actually introduced me to Vocaloid and later UTAU. We eventually joined the latter when we were around early high school. Our youngest brother, one of our cousins, and a friend of me in real life also have UTAU; the latter two made theirs out of personal interest of UTAU. I just wish my friend in real life could find some time to actually commit to his UTAU, who hasn't been used in years.

I don't share my music with my family, and after it became a touchy subject (my own fault, really) they won't ask about it anymore. I won't share my music in an unsolicited manner besides a social media post.

Edit: They're more concerned about how my daughter is doing and about regular family life stuff, which is understandable.

My wife once hilariously (to me) asked if I'd heard of Hatsune Miku after I had been involved for a couple years. My nieces were goofing off with the Nyan Cat animation on their iPod Touches and didn't believe me when I told them I talk to the singing voice behind it on Twitter and was on a CD with another song by its writer. I think people get the impression that there is more to this stuff than there is, like when you find posts asking for songs that aren't "fanmade."

The equivalent experience in the chipmusic scene was my friend asking if I'd heard of Anamanaguchi.

My parents were interested when I started but I was too embarrassed to share so they don't ask that much anymore. I have a friend who knows UTAU and Vocaloid but they use Vocaloid more since they are confused about how to use utau
