How old were you when you found UTAU and Vocaloid?

Well, like most people I met VOCALOID first: I was searching for random videos on youtube when I found "96Neko's E? Aa, sou..." Ib parody. I loved the song and I started searching more about Ib and E? Aa, sou. I was 10 or 11. I searched and found the original Hatsune Miku's "E? Aa, sou.". I discovered then that there were more of these "japanese singers": there were ones called Kagamine Rin, Meiko, Kaito, Kagamine Len, Megurine Luka, Akita Neru and Kasane Teto... I thought all of them were real people using avatars to sing, just like 96neko does. But I found MMD and downloaded it. I started searching more and more and I learned that those were virtual vocalists of some synth called VOCALOID. I also discovered Teto was UTAU, and Neru and Haku, derivatives. Still, I focused more on VOCALOID. Last 3 years I bought VOCALOID3, GUMI and KAITO.

I had downloaded UTAU once, before buying VOCALOID. But it didnt work. Oh well, I started messing around with VOCALOID and discovered I didnt have the ability to it (XD). I give it an hiatus.

OK...Then I decided trying UTAU again because I could have a big quantity of VBs for free. I downloaded UTAU, and followed the tutorials. So there it is, up to today. I used UTAU very badly at start, then I got better and better. I then tried VOCALOID again, and I managed to get a very nice tuning (specially with GUMI, KAITO still gives me some headache). I also managed to make UTAU a bit more human-ish by myself.

Nowadays, I use UTAU the most and I don't care too much about my VOCALOID3. I use it sometimes, but...I never complete a cover nor an original. I always prefer my UTAUloids over them. And VCV quality came a lot better AND when multipitch VBs came, it was almost same quality as VOCALOID.

So that is it. Oh, now I am almost 16. I have almost 100 UTAU VBs in my PC.

i found out about vocaloid and utau via a member of a forum i used to moderate around... i want to say december 2012 (so, 21 at the time). what got me hooked were the vocaloids whose voice providers were celebrities i recognized (gackt, dahee, lia). then... iroha's cover of risky game, wave, etc. the fact that the songs were easy to find compared to the mainstream japanese industry... the addition that utau existed and could produce results similar to vocaloid with one's own voice (and a lot more hands on) was a bonus that has kept me around.

A month after I turned 13 I discovered Vocaloid through Len's version of Migikata no Chou, and soon after I found out about UTAU, too. It was March 2010.

I have known about Hatsune Miku way back when I was in elementary, maybe I was just 11 at the time... I knew that she was a singer and not an anime character like almost everyone I know though back then. I thought she was a human utaite who just likes singing in a robotic way, and that she was a part of the band 'VOCALOID'. I know, stupid me, right? XD But I didn't get hooked on VOCALOID just yet!

The first ever VOCALOID song that literally killed me inside is "The Servant of Evil Classical Version". I cried for days after I replay it so many times. After that, I found out that it was actually part of a series of songs called "Evilious Chronicles". From there, I started to know more about the other VOCALOIDs, and what they really are. I got interested in other synths too, and started creating my own voice bank in UTAU PC. I named it Tomomi. It sounded like Rin with a very nasalised voice. I hated it... I was 13 by then.

After approximately two years, I bought myself a Macintosh. I was a VOCALOID addict by then. Aside from them, I also loved the UTAU covers; some of them even received more love from me than the ones with the VOCALOIDs covering it. Then I decided to get back to UTAU. Luckily, Utau-Synth existed! (Although I still switch from Windows to Mac and vice versa)

Weirdly enough, I only knew of Teto waaaaaaaaaay after I have already started using UTAU.

I can't remember dates really well but I believe I was around twelve(?) when I found out about VOCALOID through Kagamine Len and Rin's 'Butterfly On Your Right Shoulder', which I found on pure accident. Didn't understand it at all. I did find out it was a vocal synth after some research, but I wasn't really invested in the idea until I found 'Childish War', which really piqued my interest in the whole vocal synth idea.

I found UTAU very shortly after I looked up some covers and found some voices I haven't seen before; Kasane Teto was what interested me in the UTAU software, and I created my first voicebank, Falsetto Makearu, about two years(?) ago.

Ahh, I first got into Vocaloid when I was 15, don't exactly remember how, I just stumbled upon Hatsune Miku and the rest of the Vocaloids, and couple of months before my 16th birthday I got into UTAU due to Nukupoid and his cover of Butterfly on Your Right Shoulder. I am now 18 (turning 19 next month), so it has been some years. :sing:

My friend Alex introduced me to vocaloid when is was 8, my interest switched to UTAU seeing as you can get it free. Oddly enough I was not interested in making a bank until I was 14.

It was just a few weeks ago that I found out about vocaloid.

I was doing a search for singing voice on google and youtube and came across vocaloid.

I began my search on vocaloid. I read about it on wiki and under the "See Also" section I saw Utau. Since utau is free, I downloaded it and try it out.

At the beginning I faced a lot of problems, sounds not working, the USTs did not work, etc. But there is nothing wrong with the utau software, it is the the user, me, who do not know how to use the software.

After getting it to work, I play around with it and learnt a lot from some of the good USTs online, and it was fun.

There are a lot of covers and original on soundcloud and youtube. It seem like people who create or tune USTs like to upload and share their work online with others.

It would be nice if people can play with what they have created interactively, like in a music type of game.

I got into Vocaloid just a little bit before my eighth birthday. And six years later, look at me. A totally crazy anime fan. It was all thanks to Vocaloid that I found anime.

I find it, I was about to say funny, but that's not right... It's interesting that most of the answers so far say "I was 13" or "I was a tweener" so I'm saying something just to be counted as an outlier.

I have the impression that most of the Japanese OGs were in their 20s.

I found Vocaloid back in 2011, just after I turned 15. I was looking up anime openings on YouTube, probably Bleach, and in the recommended videos there was a blue haired twin tailed girl. I got curious, clicked on it, and watched it. Watched it multiple times, actually. After that, there was a recommended video of the Kagamines, Migikata no Chou. Fell in love with Len the moment I saw him. 5 years later, I still love him to death and he is still my absolute favorite. He has always been what kept me interested in singing synthesis.

As for UTAU, I found it sometime in September of 2011.

I found Vocaloid When a Friend Had the Hatsune Mix Book and I said "Who is that girl on it? She's Kind of cute for an Anime character."
He replied back "That's Hatsune Miku and she's not anime she's a vocaloid."
"what's A vocaloid?" I asked
"it's a Singer that does Concerts" He Said.
So the next day I looked up Hatsune Miku and found (The) World is Mine and Fell in love with her voice and branched off from there.
That was Less then a year ago.
(for future readers I'm 19 when I posted this 18 when I Found Vocaloid and 19 when I listened to Yowane Haku (first UTAUoid))

I found out about it in 2008, so I was... 8. I just came across YouTube videos with songs frequently.

But I didn't really look into it and thought it was an anime about singers or something lel.

Then I re-looked at it in 2013, because a friend of mine liked it. I kinda hated it at first but mostly because I was having issues with that friend. I had a change of heart later, but didn't join the community until like, 6 months ago.

in 2011 when i first met my otaku friends i thougt it was weird ( but i loved it) now i tell other people about it and hope that they feel the same about it . Even if hatsune miku isnt my favorite vocaloid ( NO HATE PLEASE HAHA ) i still think its something amazing that has much more potential than what it showes on videos and such . The same for utau , in the future i hope we can hear music from them on the radio and think its normal . But for now whe have the get everything we can out of utau and vocaloid

In 6th grade (I think?????). So 2010-2011ish. But I didn't start really liking vocal-synth until about four years ago, and didn't start trying to do anything with Utau until around the end of last year.

I was 10 when I discovered both. Discovered VOCALOID first, while encountering UTAU when I wanted to see&hear VOCALOID stuff.
