What do you think?

I'm really curious what the general consensus is on this. There's a specific UTAU I REALLY love and want to make fanart of, but they're not one of the vippers. If I were to draw this UTAU (or to put it in perspective, your guys' UTAU) and used my own art as my icon, say, on Utaforum or Deviantart/etc, how would you feel? Does this cross boundaries for you? Would adding a disclaimer about the UTAU make it any better? I really want to make myself a new avatar but I'm really afraid of making this person uncomfortable by using their character design.

Regardless of the situation I think it'd be a good idea to ask permission. It might be a bit confusing if the utau's creator also uses a picture of their utau as a profile picture, but you're making your own art so it won't be that bad..

The problem I'm having is this person has explicitly stated they do not want to be contacted. I suppose that makes the UTAU I have in mind out of the question for the time being, but it's such a bummer. I'm the type to leave credit for everything but I also don't want to potentially make someone feel uncomfortable.

Okay, I changed my vote to "something else." I originally voted for "I would be happy someone liked my UTAU so much," and that's definitely still true, but I wanted to elaborate on it. The person using my UTAU as an icon doesn't have to credit me; as long as they don't say the character/design belongs to them, I'm fine with it!

I would love if somebody used my utauloid as their icon, I would be so happy that somebody even knows my utauloid exists, but they would not be allowed to claim it is their own :3

personally, as long the person used their own art and didn't claim ownership of the character, i'd be happy. even if they used my art, honestly, as long as they asked me for permission in that case and credited me. i've seen some utau artists on pixiv say their utau art is free for any non-commercial use as long as it's properly accredited.

if this specific creator doesn't want to be contacted, it's probably better to err on the side of caution and not do it, but otherwise you're probably fine.

I think it differs between cases. One being that they used art that they didn't make/you made, and the other that they made their own art of your character. I think both are pretty charming, since it means they enjoy your UTAU enough, and with the second they enjoy them even more so if they're making art  As long as it doesn't violate TOS or offend you, it should be fine(people should also, of course, give proper credit if they did not draw the art+ask permission to use your artwork, unless it's a free-to-use type thing)

Yeah, I'm just gonna play it safe and not use my artwork of this user's UTAU as an icon. I'd be really upset if I offended them somehow and since I cannot get in contact with them I'm not going to take any risk of potentially violating the tos or making someone uncomfortable. Thanks for all the replies though, it's been interesting reading what you guys have had to say about this.

In fact, someone asked me if he could do this.
    I was quite surprised.
