EQ!?

I've heard the term EQ (I'm guessing it mean equalizer?) used a lot around the forum... But what exactly is it? I've heard it helps with pronunciation/clarity, but... Seriously, what is it? How do I add it?
If it has to do with the mixing program, I use Mixcraft 5.

There's an equalization option in Audacity, which is what I use.

EQing is adding or subtracting certain frequencies in the audio to produce a better result. It can be used to get rid of muffling, scratchiness, and also for mixing vocals into the instrumental better. I don't know how Mixcraft works, so I can't help on the actual "how," but I hope I helped with the "what."

Cdra's got a really good tutorial on EQ'ing:

I don't think it covers Mixcraft, but she does talk about what EQing is and what all the different frequencies do, so I'd imagine you'll be able to translate that knowledge over into whatever program you're using.
