Hello! I use Cakewalk for ust making, so I'll do my best to explain my method.
- First, I like to use the website "Tunebat", which will find the BPM of your song as well as the key.
- I then open up a new project in Cakewalk and import both the original audio as well as the off vocal version. Make sure that the two are properly lined up and that you've set the tempo. This can be set right below the box at the top that shows the current time of where you are in your song.
- Then I'll insert a MIDI instrument to trace the vocal parts. You can add one by either dragging one in from the Plugins tab of your Browser, or you can add one by pressing the plus button on the Tracks Pane, selecting the Instrument tab, and then selecting an instrument in the drop-down tab. For tracing the vocal parts, I personally, like to just use the default keyboard plugin that comes with Cakewalk called "Sl-Electric Piano", but any Midi instrument should be fine as long as it has a good range.
- Then I like to select each of my tracks and enable Stretch to Tempo under Groove clips in Clip Properties. Then, If you change the tempo, the speed of the audio clips/MIDI instrument will change as well. Its helpful to slow things down a bit if you cannot figure out a certain part or to check if you've timed everything accurately.
- I then begin drawing in the vocal parts using the MIDI instrument, going small chunk by small chunk. You can use either the Draw tool, or the Smart tool, But I use the Smart tool just because its easier to delete notes and make adjustments.
- When I'm done, I disable Stretch to Tempo on everything, and drag the MIDI tracks to my desktop. Remember to make sure you're back to the original tempo first.
- Last you have to import your MIDI file into UTAU. File, Import, select your MIDI file, Option 2, then OK. Set Tempo and insert your lyrics and you'll be all done.
I'm not very good at explaining, I'm sorry, but this is how I make my USTs in Cakewalk.
