Interlink Co., Ltd., the registry operator for the “.moe” gTLD generic top-level domain is hosting an “Idoloid” contest for UTAU & Vocaloid voicebanks. With a grand prize of 200,000 JPY (approx $1,850 USD) and five runner up prizes of 10,000 JPY (approx $90 USD) the contest challenges users to create music for Moe-tan the domain registry’s mascot.

Interlink has provided three sets of pre-written lyrics for entrants to write their music around with Lyric A being titled “0.2mm no kyoukaisen”, Lyric B as “dot moe”, and the shortest Lyric C being “rairuto nijito moerusekai”. An important thing of note is that all entries must be made with either a Vocaloid, UTAU, or other similar synthesizer vocal.

Though the grand prize will likely go to someone Japanese considering the amount of effort Interlink put into the English version of the contest page I expect at least a couple of the runnerup prizes to go to foreigners. If you are not entering for the money it might be worth it for the notoriety.

Hnnngh a third chance? Yessssss. Although I'm a little disappointed that the lyrics are given to you since that's my stronger suit.

I do have one concern though. Would it be alright to use other people's UTAU? I could use Mayu, but I'd honestly rather use UTAU and I don't have my own bank yet.

It would depend on the UTAU. I would recommend against using a voicebank that does not allow provisions for commercial use. Interlink is a business and would like want to use the winning song and voice as part of their promotional material for their brand and Idoloid.moe project.

Any UTAU with unclear licence terms or that do not explicitly allow commercial use of the voicebank output would be of limited utility to Interlink and thus less likely to win any prizes or recognition.

Ahhh, that makes sense, thank you.

I noticed that they say they might disqualify you if your song is too short or long, but they don't have any explicit length regulations (as far as I can tell anyway). I wonder if I asked them on Twitter they would be willing to give me actual numbers. I get paranoid if the rules aren't 100% clear

I don't think I will enter it... It's nice but well... I don't feel it... Lately I've been trying to enter contests but because of college and the fact that no matter how early and how much hard I work, there's always something getting in my way crushing my projects and dreams.... So yeah, now I'm pretty much demotivated T^T

Anyway, if I could, then it'd be hard for me as for this one, I don't even know which 'loid to use....

And as Tiffany said, I'd wait for more precise rules before even considering entering it

(Also, Moe-tan's flowers earphones (?) and the pun with the origin of the word "moe" it's just  )

Edit: Also, what do they mean by "You may be asked to provide all track para data" ?

I think they mean track stems. That would make sense, since they'd probably want to be able to edit/remix the winner's music.

Oh, oki (but then we'd have to render each track seperately, like, one with main vocals, one with harms, one with the BGM, etcetc ? )

I would think most DAWs would have the option to render them separately but simultaneously (if that makes sense). Not sure though. I know Reaper can render stems.

On another note, I'm tempted to use Gengo to translate the lyrics because they're really weird (at least Lyric B... from what I made of it, it sounds a little lewd)

From what i can understand, Lyrics B can be a tribute to anime and computer fans but I can be wrong...

(Also, am I dreaming or is there a reference to Sailor Moon at a moment ?? )

It's possible. I couldn't make sense of the line talking about the moon. When I tried to translate it it literally came out to, "Secondary bridge moon exchange." I know one of the last verses talks about marrying a figurine, and it talks about Akihabara, but that's all I know for certain.

I haven't looked into A or C yet. I was going to try B because I had ideas for the background "moe"s but I suppose I should check them all out before I decide.

If I was entering it, I'd be tempted by A or B... Mostly B justly...

and yeah, (i didn't notice the presence of Akihabara... however at one moment in the Engrish part I saw "Geek-na domain" so)

So I paid for Lyrics A to be translated after my disastrous attempt at doing Lyrics B myself and A is really sweet

I want my voice to reach you
to where you are in the third dimension
Not competing against you
But talking with you
Adventurer who saves the world
You are setting out on a journey again today
The space between me and you is
A 0.2 mm boundary
I came to know the world through you
I came to know the me reflected in your eyes
I've memorized
The words you say, so I am not myself
Someone said that God doesn't throw the dice
Meetings are always fated
I want my voice to reach you
to where you are in the third dimension
Not competing against you
But talking with you
Adventurer who saves the world
You are setting out on a journey again today
The space between me and you is
A 0.2 mm boundary
Tell me what you see
Tell me what you're feeling right now
Pick up the pieces of me
That you have inside

Our overlapping worlds will converge someday
So we don't have to rush so much
I want my voice to reach you
to where you are in the third dimension
Not competing against you
But talking with you
Adventurer who saves the world
You are setting out on a journey again today
The space between me and you is
A 0.2 mm boundary

*0.2 mm is the thickness of liquid crystal.

Hey does anyone have any idea how any of these songs sound when spoken or sung in Japanese? I would appreciate it so much if anyone could help me make my song :-)

Well, you have the romaji~ ouo/ (and for the spoken/sung, you're free to do it the way you want, there's no really way to sing them)

It says use a robotic voice such as vocaloid but can we autotune our voices? I mean is the same thing XD
Edit1: I say this because it's more easy for me to compose over a created melody than using the vocaloid or utau (using vocalis and utaris is exausting y.y )

It says Vocaloid specifically, but they mean to say that they allow usage of things like UTAU, Sinsy, Cadencii, Niaoniao, Cevio, etc. as well. To sing it yourself with your own voice would disqualify an entry.

When I'm writing a song I tend to do the melody by singing it, and then making a placeholder track for a midi. Then I can export that and add the lyrics.
