Hi..umm i am new to using utau but i love utau covers since 2017 not too long haha anyway i started making covers and uploaded 2 covers in yt . My goal is to learn and make kazakh and arabic VB but there is a lot to learn . So my question is ..what is this ? The thing under the notes (mod 0 ) (mod smthg )
I searched about it and it says its "modulation "and i tried to do it but i dont think it does that much difference even if i put it on 200 and it doesnt appear on screen like the screenshot one ..i thought it was about the moresampler and i downloaded it but now i know it doeant have anything to do with it . I am super confused . Btw this screenshot from kimchi-tan ♡

Hellow! I hope I can help you, my name is Big-P and I'm happy to meet you. ^^

But we need to talk about some things first: you posted in the wrong area. If I'm not wrong u should posted in utahelp. I know that you're a newcomer and wanted to had your question answered in the same post (Prob bc you just want help and don't want to continue posting here), but some people will not see it with good eyes. So move to Utahelp and introduce yourself in another post, ok? ^^

Well, I really wanted to tell you a precisely answer for your question, but idk that much about mod, sry! :/ What I think that it does is change the specifications of the formant filter effect in a way to achieve a pitch near the original ".wav". XD Yeah, I know it's hard to understand, but I'll make it easier for you. If you want to understand better I recomend you to download Kye's CV voicebank that you can find here:

(It's just because Kye's vb is easier to see the effects of modulation, mod will act differently for each vb (Voicebank))

So, let's begin!

Formant Filter
is a filter used in mixing to change a sound wave to get different results, it's used in a way that you can change a sound wave to sound more like any vowel that you want (a, e, i, o, u). This video will help you to understand better what formant filter is:

But in utau, at least is what I believe, it's used in the note pitch and note frequency map change.

What is pitch?

Do you know the piano roll (The piano titles in the utau)? Did you noticed that every title has a letter? Like C4, C#4, D5? These are the pitches! If you put a note in C2 your utau voice will sound like a bass: https://voca.ro/7FTgSa2CJrb (I used the "A" to this recording)

But if you put a note in C4 you will see that the sound will be higher: https://voca.ro/esYq0BFpsd5 (I used the "A" to this recording)

You can hear the sound higher bc it's in a higher pitch (C4) and in the bass case the pitch is lower (C2). That's basically what pitch is.

Coming back to Formant Filter

Some voicebanks aren't multipitch (A voicebank recorded in more than just one pitch. If done correctly you can have a better quality utau with less robotic sound), so utau needs Formant Filter to edit the notes and make it sound higher or lower, without it the program by itself couldn't get a satisfactory result when you need the utau to sing in a different pitch than the one it was recorded (Specially higher pitches). Example:

(Kye's CV with Formant Filter active) https://voca.ro/o79UVVHBljt

(Kye's CV without Formant Filter active) https://voca.ro/oSZzskjEGVa (Sounds like chipmunk XD)

(If you want to disable the formant filter to test you have to right click the note that you want to deactivate, go to property)

upload_2020-8-19_16-45-22.png

(Then check the "No Formant Filter" box. Becareful, some utaus can sound really strange when this is checked. Kye for example sounds good with bass notes, but his higher notes are pretty bad when this is checked)

upload_2020-8-19_16-46-8.png

Frequency map is the map of a wav sound frequency. I don't know how exactly the frequency works, but I believe that it tells to the utau program what pitch the note was recorded and is used to the pitchbending/tuning too (The red squares/lines in your notes that you can change to get different results in your notes). You can generate one going into tools, voicebank settings and then in initialize freq map. If you want to check not just the frequency map, but the original pitch that the note was recorded you can go into the Edit freq map option:

upload_2020-8-19_16-55-43.png

You see? This is the frequency map of the note "a 3.wav" from Kye's CV voicebank. The red line marks that this note was recorded a little above C4 pitch, the blue squares are actually a representation of your voice's frequency and the green wave is the .wav file sound. If you open "a 3.wav" from Kye's CV voicebank in a program (Like audacity, for example) you will see exactly the same as the green wave.

After telling you all this stuff now I'll tell you what mod does. Basically it will modify the formant filter options and will make the note pitch sound near the original .wav file. That's why mod changes from vb to vb, some voicebanks (vb) are recorded in a regular pitch (frequency) that makes higher mod values sound really bad ^^', but some others can sound more realistic like Kye:

https://voca.ro/cslkBVzY4Fy (Kye with mod)

https://voca.ro/da6Tg0cflpr (Kye without mod)

And some others can even sound like it doesn't change nothing at all (Idk, but maybe it's because you're using a VCV utau. But I really don't know why yours doesn't changed).

And if you want to appear in your screen you have to press the "P" and "~" boxes in the left lower side of the program, if you press them they will appear.

But it's just my opinion since no one give me a concrete answer probably I'm wrong in something. I really figured that out testing voicebanks with this option in different manners so it's just based in my tests! ^^ Sorry for not giving you a good answer or a right one!

I hope I could help you, thanks if you read everything!

See ya! ^^ <3

Ps: I mistake in the end, if you record in a more regular pitch better will be the mod effect. If your pitch is irregular worse will be mod effect.

Very impressive length, but incorrect. Please don't spread misinformation.

Modulation has nothing to do with formant. Frequency tables indeed trace the pitch of a given wav file, as well as storing the average pitch of the entire sample. When you play a note in UTAU, the resampler will change the pitch of the sample so that the average pitch matches the pitch of the note.
With Modulation set to 0, the pitch will be flattened out so that the entire note is at the average pitch.
At 100, the pitch variation will match the original sample.
Values between 0 and 100 correspond to the distance between completely flat pitch and matching the original sample.
Values above 100 will exaggerate the pitch (so if the beginning of the note is higher than average, it will become even higher than the original).
Values below 0 will reverse the pitch (so if the beginning of the note is higher than average, it will become lower than average instead).

I wasn't spreading misnformation, it's just a answer that is wrong since found utau content about these "little things" in english is kinda hard. I even research an utau wikia page about mod, but I didn't find anything. I see that as a way to learn more about the program, it's really hard to search good content so almost everything that I learned was through observation and test.

Not just that, but in any moment I assumed that this was the correct informatiom or answer. I would be spreading misinformation if I said that it's right, but in any moment I said it is. Tbh it's pretty good to be corrected like this because we can learn about utau "more correctly" (Since idk your fonts. I'm not telling you're wrong, but Idk your fonts so it can be as wrong as mine) and learn about things better.

And at the end we said similar things:

"...and will make the note pitch sound near the original .wavfile."

Even if I was wrong about Formant Filter acting here, the Formant Filter information isn't wrong, a thing that I just discovered some years ago bc no one talks about formant filter in utau (Even it's not a really important subject I'm the kinda of person who likes to know everything that I can about a program).

I believe this kinda of passive agressive/censure posture from yours is bad to the forum. It's a discussion forum and it's okay if you don't know about something, you can try to answer someone and if you're wrong it's okay bc there is other people! People that can help with the right answer, like you! ^^ So don't be so mean when people's answers are wrong, this is a forum at all!

TL;DR but...
<quote>I wasn't spreading misnformation, it's just a answer that is wrong</quote>

There's nothing wrong with trying to be helpful, but if your scope of knowledge is limited on a subject, then it's best to try to answer the question in a succinct format. That's where the problem in your answer lies. By writing your answer in such a long winded way, you'll exhaust the intended audience where they may indeed NOT read anyone else's input.

There's the assumption that if someone has so much to say, then they must know what they're talking about. Wrong information in such a long format will be trusted as truth which is where it becomes misinformation. If you want to be helpful but aren't 100% sure of something, state "I may be wrong but I think [subject] is..." leave it at no more than roughly a few sentences... Paragraph at most. But please don't do a giant information dump like your previous answer in a space that's not intended to be the tutorial section. It's not your fault where this question ended up, but if a thread is started in the wrong space, please inform a mod, that way it can be relocated.

I really understand the part that I have to be more succint, it's cool to receive short answers, but I'm the type of person who wants to know everything about utau. This curiosity moves me to do a lot of things with utau, but more important, to want to spread the knowledge more accurately since I doesn't found a good amount of information about utau.

If we stop and actually read what I said so you'll see that what I said about formant (Except that mod changes formant) and pitch are right. When someone says that they're new using utau I have to assume that maybe he/she doesn't know everything about the program. So I can come here and say that mod turns the note pitch near to the original pitch, but if the person doesn't even know what is pitch they will not understand entirely my answer. But if I explain them what is pitch they will even learn about something cool adding in their knowledge about utau. Like I said, sometimes it's really hard to find something about utau in english.

So everything I said about formant and pitch was not just right, but they're complementing what I was saying. I was just wrong about formant having something linked with mod.

I understand that people can figure out that what I'm saying is completely right, but I was with that in mind and that's why I started my answer with this:

"Well, I really wanted to tell you a precisely answerfor your question, but idk that much about mod, sry! :/ What I think that it does is change the specifications of the formant filter effect in a way to achieve a pitch near the original ".wav"."

They can assume, but as I said through my entire answer was that maybe I could be wrong. Not just that but my answer is long just because I was showing them a good vb to hear the mod results, since they said that couldn't hear difference with their utau, and was explaining to them what formant and pitch is. Obviously that talking about formant (Even if what I said is right) was wrong bc it doesn't have much to do with the subject (mod) even if the definition of what formant filter is right, but in order to understand what mod is they need to understand what pitch is.

So there's nothing wrong about big answers, especially when what was wrong was just this small detail about mod and formant. I will write a long answer even if I know that formant doesn't have anything to do with so I believe that the real motive why you're complaining is not bc I wrote a large answer.

At the end you're telling me how should I be answering people or not, but is this really a forum? I think I can answer in any way that I want so still not any problem with big answers (Specially this one). I agree that I should call someone from the moderation to change the thread (Even if my answer starting speaking about it), but this doesn't have anything to do with our discussion.

Don't get me wrong, but I don't know why are you replying here and I still doesn't understand why I can't answer in such a long way since I have free speech to tell about everything I want in the way that I want. As I said not just in this answer, but in the one before that (The one that I'm starting to think that you didn't read), what I said is right! I was just wrong in the mod is realated with formant. If they took it as the right answer, they will not have trouble bc it's just a little detail.

I understand that if everything that I said here was wrong it would be a trouble, but to the person took it as the right one or not is relied just on them. This is a Forum after all, you come here expecting different answers to one subject. So it's still being their problem took the wrong one as the right one. I understand there giving wrong answers to people aren't cool (Even it's not exactly the cas), but at the end it's a forum! :/ So I have my right to say wrong things.

At the end he helped not just they but me too telling me the truth and I'm grateful for that! What I'm complaining is the term "spread misinformation" like if I was doing it intentionally. It was extremely passive agressive when you use terms like "spread" instead of "told/tell/say/etc" in this case, specially when from everything that I said I was wrong just about a small detail! Specially when I and him even said the same thing at the end!

Really that you came to this thread just to try to censure me when there is not a good reason to do that? And worse, you didn't even consider that the other came with an extremely agressive term like "spread". I'm getting really upset now, this is not cool bro! Not cool!

There was nothing wrong with Kiyoteru's response. He was not being "mean" as all he said was not to spread misinformation, which for the question that was asked, you did. If someone asks a question and you give an answer that has incorrect information, that is misinformation. That's all there is to it.

And because it is a forum, you need to be careful of the information you share because someone may Google a question similar to the one ask and get your response that has nothing to do with the actual question and go ahead with that information as if it is factual. Perhaps misinformation is too strong of a word but the fact still remains that your answer for the most part had nothing to do with the question asked. Your answer may have useful information, but does not answer the question and thus, by definition of the word, is misinformation, intentional or not.

As you said, it is a forum. The same way you want to write extremely verbose replies that really adds nothing to your response in my honest opinion, other members of this forum can express their thoughts of said replies. You have your right to say incorrect things, but every single person on this forum has the right to call you out for saying it because as you made perfectly clear numerous times, this is a forum and this is our right.

So basically, what Modulation controls is how much of the original tone/change of tone in the recordings leaks into singing. Kinda hard to describe. Non existent and 100 are the same and 0 neutralizes all modulation - however, a slight value depending on the UTAU can help it sound more natural. For most UTAUs I normally put 30 in the modulation settings and tweak it from there.

( copy pasted from different thread )
:sing:

Note that if you use too much modulation your utau will sound really strange and if you don't use enough then it won't do much. So my advice in using mod is to just experiment until you find what you' re looking for. ( sorry for messy explanation wwwwwhjjhgj )

The short answer is modulation controls how on-pitch your notes are compared to the raw sample.

If you have a bit of a shaky pitch in your sample recording mod0 flattens it and makes it more on tune based on its position on the piano roll. Setting it to mod100 will make it sound closer to your raw sample while sacrificing some accuracy as far as the pitch of the note goes.

Kiyoteru's answer is correct.

View attachment 9502

(Then check the "No Formant Filter" box. Becareful, some UTAU can sound really strange when this is checked. Kye for example sounds good with bass notes, but his higher notes are pretty bad when this is checked)

View attachment 9503

Frequency map is the map of a wav sound frequency. I don't know how exactly the frequency works, but I believe that it tells to the utau program what pitch the note was recorded and is used to the pitchbending/tuning too (The red squares/lines in your notes that you can change to get different results in your notes). You can generate one going into tools, voicebank settings and then in initialize freq map. If you want to check not just the frequency map, but the original pitch that the note was recorded you can go into the Edit freq map option:

View attachment 9504

Basically it will modify the formant filter options and will make the note pitch sound near the original .wav file. https://voca.ro/da6Tg0cflpr (Kye without mod)

I am so grateful you knew exactly what i asking for ♡ and also thank you for pointing my mistake of posting , i will try to do better and post correctly . Its just the same for me in discord i tell my friends that if i was ignoring them on discord its actually becus i dont really know how to post or reply separately or mention so yes i will do my best and thanks one last time for ur time Big_B ♡

Kinda confusing and hard to understand but i will try to carefully read it and try it on UTAU to understand it , Kiyoteru ty for ur reply ♡
[doublepost=1598035721][/doublepost]
So basically, what Modulation controls is how much of the original tone/change of tone in the recordings leaks into singing. Kinda hard to describe.

Gosh dont apologize! I am very grateful for ur reply so i get it 30 is like the normal number to put on modulation and anything higher might not work greatly on most of utauloids right?

First of all wow so many responses and soo many information i need to read carefully and use it on utau to fully understand ty so much for ur reply and i am sorry it looks like i posted in the wrong place ? As Big-P said there place called for posting this kind of posts so yeah sorry i think it was kind of rude of me and ...secondly ..Umm..i still really dont understand entirely about modulation , but i think my question or the thing i was pointing out on the screenshot wasnt really modulation as Big_B said , the thing is I just wanna what is the thing that says mod (number ) under every note and how i can make it appear on mine too .
[doublepost=1598036389][/doublepost]Oh
Ps: I mistake in the end, if you record in a more regular pitch better will be the mod values. If your pitch is irregular worse will be mod effect.
Oh , ok ! Btw i looove kye ~ and i downloaded him just in case , i like his voice sooo much so yeah as u said i will try the things u said using his VB ~

I am sorry... this is all my fault and please dont think about saying no its not ur fault Because it REALlY looks like i really did a mistake of posting this in the wrong place so yeah i will introduce myself (hopefully correctly) next post ..but i dont wanna delete this thread ( if possible) becus there is too many information here that i need . Ty for replying

(PS: Don't worry about posted in the wrong place, I think that soon a moderator will change it to the proper place. Unfortunately I'm new here too, so I can't say if a moderator already did that. Just be careful next time and everything will be okay! Once again, thx for the rplying! ^^)

I do not think there is a "normal" number to enter in modulation. I just put number 30 there so that I have an easier time finding what number of modulation fits an utau best. Every utau has different modulation settings that works best for them. ^^ just wanted to clarify a few things.
