combining banks: making UTAU play two samples at once (?)

yo! I have an interesting conundrum I'd LOVE feedback on. for a while now, my mind roams back to this video. this person no longer works with Ruko and doesn't seem to like to talk about it? so I don't wanna bother them. however, the concept has been driving me crazy. in the video, you can tell it does sound like they somehow got UTAU to play multiple VB samples at once (and not in the usual "main vb" "voice color VB" type way.) it genuinely sounds like both VB's combined to one sample. and from how they talk about it, that's what's happening? looking at the comments, they say:

"I used setParam to change the alias of every pitch in the fem voicebank, then I copied each edited pitch folder in the male voicebank folder: (twitter picture explanation) Sry I'm not good at explaining ^^;"

I have tried so many different ways of doing this and have not gotten the same results. either the bank just plays one VB, or none. I'm not new to this, either! I've tried combining all pitches to one folder, adding suffixes as mentioned, I've changed the prefix map, I even tried using the "combine .oto" feature in setparam - to no avail. the most I've gotten UTAU to do is use the fem VB like a voice color. based of of the pictures in the twitter post - it doesn't even look like the aliases are changed? but there's such limited info I could be wrong.

my question is this - is getting UTAU to play both samples at once, "mixing" them, even possible? or are they just using a lot of flags in this cover to affect the male VB and, perhaps, sprinkled a few of the female VB's pitches along a couple notes? I'd love to get everyone else's opinion on this as it's been driving me mad, lol.

No, it's impossible for utau to play two notes at the same time even from different voicebanks. It's likely they simply did the second option you talked about. If you use openutau, you can play two tracks at the same time and have them sing the same notes, but not in the same track or in the original version of utau. You can simply use them as voice colors of each other, as there's not exactly anything preventing you from doing so. If you want to do that in og utau, I'd recommend using ResamplerOverwriter for simplicity.

see, and I've been thinking that, but since I can't work out what flags they used to replicate it, I've been sat here like "what if... you can and I just don't know about it?"

thank you for putting this to rest for me lol, I felt like I was insane

Flags have nothing to do with voice colors. What you can do is edit the prefix.map to have it switch automatically between them or use suffixes on the notes if you have the samples in the same folders. If you want to use flags, you can use the ResamplerOverwriter program I mentioned earlier.

right, no, I know that - I just meant tonally to replicate fully the way the linked cover sounds. I'm aware of how voice colors work lol (which is why this perplexed me for so long)
