Three milk chocolate bars from an US supermarket: A review
The United States of America is called many things: The land of the free, the home of the brave, etc.
The US is not considered by any means to be the âland of chocolateâ. No, my country of origin is not considered even standard cocoa-wise to countries like the UK. And so, I bring to you, a sampling of 3 milk chocolate bars found in an US grocery store to see how things stack up.:
Hersheyâs Milk Chocolate, Newmanâs own milk chocolate, and Godiva Milk Chocolate.
Hersheys: As far as packaging, Hersheyâs comes in a plastic wrapper. Its smell is creamy yet dark. Hersheyâs is not very creamy. It is very sweet. Its taste seems less strong than I have remembered it to be.Melt in your mouth: takes a while; flavor more strong, somewhat acidic?
Newmanâs: this organic bar is packaged in paper. It has a less noticeable, more creamy smell. The newmanâs is harder than the Hershey, sweeter than the Hershey, and less creamy than the Hershey. The bar uses cane sugar (It tastes like the sugar in the raw stuff). You bite it with a crunch. I can barely taste the chocolate flavor. Melting in your mouth: takes longer than the godiva
Godiva: Packaged in paper with a foil covering the chocolate. Godiva has a more cocoa smell, also very creamy. The godiva when bitten is softer and creamier than the newmanâs. When chewed, the godiva is more likely to crumble. Melting in your mouth: very creamy, melts quite fast; enjoyable.
Results: The evaporated cane juice in the Newmanâs made it unenjoyable for me. The hersheyâs is just the plainâ ol hersheyâs. Of the three, I preferred the Godiva, but only for melting in oneâs mouth. All three have a waxy solidness to them that doesnât feel like it should be there.
Theory: US chocolate sucks!
My question: What are your chocolate experiences? What country do you get your chocolate from and why? Is there good japanese chocolate?
