Utau won't sing

Hey there, total UTAU newb here (plz don't hurt me) and I'm dealing with an issue that's probably a really simple oversight on my part, but I'm just not sure what to do since I'm new to the program.

I know the basics of the UI and have gotten Defoko and Tsukine Sayuri to sing properly using the Romaji to Hiragana plugin, but I've also downloaded and installed voicebanks for Pam and Sekka Yufu and can't get them to sing at all. It looks like the voicebanks load properly, and when I check Sound List I do see files there for Pam at least, but I can't get her or Sekka Yufu to sing. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Maybe upload screenshots? Like are there symbols or dashes in the voicebanks? Utau can be really picky when it comes to exact file/alias name....

Sure, I've taken some screenshots. I hope it helps:

^This is what the test project file I've been using looks like. It's supposed to say "watashi wa pamu desu," converted from romaji with the Romaji to Hiragana converter, but I'm not running Utau in Japanese Locale, so it looks like gibberish. When I switch the voicebank over to Defoko or Tsukine Sayuri I can hear them sing it, but not Pam.

^When I right-click and hit Sound List in that file with Pam loaded, I see this. (again, all gibberish b/c not in Japanese Locale etc) I can click on the files and hear her singing. When I switch over to Sekka Yufu, though, it's actually all blank.

^If it helps, here's Pam's voicebank properties and the project config info.

If it's relevant, I see the following error when I load Pam: "Info: 'sample.wav': No configuration." I don't see any errors for Seffa Yuku or any other downloaded banks, though I do see a string of "Info: The preutterance of '* ‚¨' is longer than the overlap" when I load up Defoko, though she sings properly.

Let me know if these pictures don't help and I can take better ones. Thanks for the response ^^

I'm not running Utau in Japanese Locale

You need to uninstall and delete UTAU, delete all the Japanese voicebanks you have, and change your locale to Japanese. This will not affect your computer's normal language settings. It enables UTAU to properly use Japanese characters and prevent this gibberish/mojibake. After your locale has been changed, you can safely reinstall UTAU and redownload Japanese voicebanks.

Hmm, yeah, I figured this might be an issue. I do have a Japanese Locale Emulator though that I can run the program in to display the text properly. Or is that not enough? Also, when I run the program in Japanese locale with that emulator, the program itself is all in Japanese, so I can't read any of the menu stuff. Is that just something I have to deal with?

No, you'll need to actually change your computer's locale. The locale also affects when you download voicebanks and decompress them, to make sure the Japanese encoding stays intact. Though, if you don't intend to use any Japanese voicebanks at all, you might be able to get away with only running UTAU under Japanese locale.

Once you've changed it, you can switch the language in UTAU back to English by doing this: Go to Tools (T), Options (O), General (first tab), Others (second sub-tab), and check the last item in the list (change language). The little drop down menu has an option for "en".

That was going to be one of my questions; always have the Japanese locale before you install UTAU
