Technically speaking, no appends are "required".

In terms of what is "standard" in utau, I'd say;

Standard (your normal vocal tone)
Soft (A soft-spoken, almost whisper kind of tone)
Strong/Power (Belting)

For expressive vocals, it's important to focus on what genre or style of music you want your UTAU to perform. You can eliminate singing styles that aren't relevant to that kind of music.

Vocal fry and KIRE/Power, because you can mash them together and it sounds really good.
i say kire, vocal fry (Vowels only if consonants are hard), soft, maybe whisper, and cute or power are good tones to record if you want a versatile bank. A smooth "drunk" bank (teto smooth append) is not a good idea
