Equalization for Morons (Audacity)

Equalization for Morons (Audacity)

Found this article. Good explanation of the importance of reverb, EQ, and compression, the resources linked from it are OK too. It mentions "subtractive EQ" which I didn't know much about when writing this resource.

Basically, if you don't wanna read the article, subtractive EQ is a technique where you only reduce frequencies rather than increase them. It gives somewhat of a better sound than boosting them since the frequencies you want are probably already there. You can't always avoid boosting frequencies so don't be too **** about this but it's just better to err on the side of subtractive.

  1. Lightly boosting the 10kHz+ range - around 1-2 decibels - can add what the pros call "gloss" to a vocal. It's a really subtle effect but it really makes vocals sparkle!
  2. This set of plugins can be very useful. However, make sure to save before using them because I've found that they sometimes crash. I'll explain them below but read the manual that comes with them for more detailed explanations.
    1. Blockfish - very intuitive and easy-to-use compressor that also lightly adjusts the EQ.
    2. Spitfish - a de-esser, very useful for certain utau and nearly all English vocautau stuff. (edit: To clarify, a de-esser reduces "S" sounds in a track, also known as sibilance. It also reduces the sound of t, f, th, k, p, sh, etc.) Very effective!
    3. Floorfish - An expander/gate device. What this does is it changes the rate at which sounds get louder or softer. To be honest, I'm not totally sure exactly what it does or how it's useful, but if you know how to use it, good onya, and if you don't, the other two are definitely worth the dead weight of this one.
