Hello, everyone. I'm a new UTAU user and an old Vocaloid/UTAU fan and recently I've been thinking of uploading Jinriki covers on the Internet.

I know Jinriki voicebanks are problematic in the sense that they are made using characters' voice samples from shows/anime/video games, and without having any permission from the voice actor/seiyuu that has given "life" to that character.
Also, I know of the rule to NEVER provide a download link of the voicebank.

Despite knowing all that I would like to upload covers but I want to hear the community's opinion first.

Obviously, I have my doubts. I don't want to disrespect anyone but I have seen so many videos both on Youtube and NN with Jinriki covers... But only because many people do something, it doesn't mean is a good thing. I know as much.

To be honest, I don't know what to do. I can always make and keep the covers to myself for personal enjoyment but... I want to share the joy I feel hearing my favorite characters sing and the songs they are capable of doing.

Am I looking for someone to reprimand me and tell me to stop altogether or do I just want someone to tell me how to be sneaky and how to avoid as many consequences as possible?

It's 1:45 am right now so I apologize if I sound like a mess but I have been thinking about all this for months and I guess I'm a little saturated.

In any case, I want to hear your opinion.

Also, I've seen other people in this forum talking about Jinriki as well. I would like to collect the general opinion here for anyone else who is thinking of making a Jinriki and uploading content.
Even if it sounds like a fun idea, the social impact it can have is also important so it should be considered beforehand. That's what I believe.

Thanks for reading this far! Goodnight!

If you'd like to create a voicebank but you are unable to record yourself (no equipment, no quiet location, health problems with your voice) then I have the following recommendations.

1. Commission someone to record samples for you, or offer a fair trade that fully compensates their effort. You can ask this voicer to mimic the sound of actors/characters that you like. In this case you should still be mindful of the copyright of the character design, and how you choose to use artwork and the character's name. There are sometimes companies that have explicit provisions for fanmade content.

2. Find vocal samples online that permit reuse. You can check for things like public domain, or Creative Commons licenses, or custom licenses that give the right permissions. Basically, look for vocal-only singing tracks that are shared for anyone to make into songs and remixes. You will still need to chop and edit these to get the phonemes you need for an UTAU bank. This isn't going to be the character voice, nor can you really say it represents the character. However you do have a lot of freedom and won't need to wait for another person to record for you.

3. Reach out directly to the voice actor/singer/performer that you want to collaborate with. You will probably have to find their agent or company and send an actual business email, not just tag the person on Twitter. Explain the whole UTAU voicebank project and what will be involved (eg. How much you'll pay the voicer, licensing the official character, whether the voicebank will be for private promotional work or a commercial product that can earn back the development cost).
