There are plenty of free daws out there beyond audacity. While I am vaguely familiar with the 3rd one, due to it's relation to Sound Forge (it's been a long while since I've used it), I have not used any of these [free ones] personally.

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html - wavepad

http://www.wavosaur.com/ - wavosaur

http://www.acidplanet.com/downloads/xpress/ - ACID Xpress

http://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one/download - Studio One Free (you'll probably get the most bang for your buck with this since it's a full daw that's completely free and probably easier to learn than Reaper)

Reaper (completely free so long as you don't make anything commercial - idk how to use it)
_____________

Not so free ones include (you'll either have to use demos, trials, or pay for it in some form if you don't go the piracy route)...

FL Studio (Fruity Loops - also good for making midis for USTs and instrumentals. Demo doesn't allow you to save so you'll have to make and render your project all at one time or never close it until you finish)

Mixcraft (there are plenty of ways to get the older versions (4 or 5) for... free. For the legal route, the trial is 14 days and you won't be able to render after the trial runs out)

Audition (trial for this is 30 days I believe)

In that case go with FL... it can do ANYTHING...and lots of it! But yeah if its the demo you can't save. You will spend hours reading the instructions though...

Another good program to use is Cubase, but it's even pricier than FL /shot

I've also heard of Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS) and I have it downloaded but I can't figure out how to work it. It is also free.

Ah lame can be lame....im tellin you just use fl for free, render and eq your samples, you can still export them, its just the PROJECT you can't save. Everything is still exportable.so, render, eq, export, then mix. Anyway thats what I do.
