Recording Habits?

I try to keep to a standard I learned in my school district's music program.

-Sit up straight as if I were going to play an instrument

-Breathe from the diaphragm (like I'm supposed to anyway)

-I try to keep a good distance from the Mic. Both to reduce breathiness and so I'm not putting too much distortion into the microphone.

-I take my time, most importantly! No good products ever come from rushing things!

-I breathe in when I click the record button so I have my windpower when I sing something on my own reclist.

that's a good question! ouo

- I always record when nobody is home// one day I tried to record while my brother was at home and he made fun of me xD
- I turn off the tv and everything that makes noise
- I usually lock myself in the room in which I'll record the vb// I'm always afraid that my neighbours could hear me and think that I'm crazy xD specially when it comes to record a vcv vb
- I try to record everything on the same note and at the same time

I like to record at night when NO ONE will disturb me or when mum's out at work.
I like to drink water and put lip balm on while I record.
Never records outside my room.
I also like to record it in one go like this:
a,e,i,o,u,ka,ke,ki,ko,ku etc. etc.
When I record my "h" samples I pause the recording and practice like this:
h-ha, h-h-ha.
I record my "r" samples separately.

I see most of us record at night and/or no one's home XD -

- I also record at night since it's quiet (especially after midnight) - My mic picks up even the slightest of noise - especially from outside during the day even I'm in a closed room
- I drink warm water or in some cases ginger tea (salabat) before recording but not during.
- If I can't get a sample right (i.e. too loud, pronunciation) I usually repeat myself several times until I get it right before recording again. (especially with the Rs)
- After recording, I listen to all the samples to check for consistency and just re-record those that doesn't seem to sound right.

My biggest thing is that I record everything in one wav file. I've had some people kind of scold me for it, lol. I don't use Oremo or anything like that (up until recently I didn't really understand it. Stupid me!)

But because if I start and stop between samples, my tone and pitch ends up kind of all over the place. So I record everything in one sitting/wav file, and then cut it up later.

As for when, I try to wait until nobody is home. It's quietest then. But most people here are /always/ home, so it's really difficult.

Sit up straight, always breath from the diaphragm! I also make sure not to use "headvoice", and make sure to use "chestvoice". Not that headvoice is bad, but I like to try and keep things more natural when making UTAU banks.

I don't record very often now since my microphone is broken! But anyway, I hate recording in open spaces (like hallways or living rooms), so I prefer to be in a room. I don't mind people being around, I feel totally fine if I'm singing or UTAU recording. It's really awkward when I'm talking though, which explains why I never use headphones while Skyping.

When other people are in the room they usually will leave me alone, because they'll know I'm trying to record something.

If I'm trying to sing a different voice type, I'll definitely try to find the best pitch for it, and then I'll sing a song or something to get my voice used to it. Especially if it's a lower voice, since my voice is naturally high (despite my preference to sing wowaka songs an octave lower).

Um.. Well usually I'm lying on a bed or something so I don't pay attention to posture. But sitting up helps.

Overall recording is very casual for me. If I'm in a room that's relatively quiet and I have a working microphone, I'll record.

Of course, I should probably improve my recording habits if I'm going to make that fabulous voicebank I'm planning.

Oh boy, my recording habits...
When I start recording, I usually do not stop until I've reached my goal. I was recording a tri-pitch 2-more vcv bank yesterday and I told myself that I won't stop until I am done with all of the "i's". I had other plans that day and it ended up taking all of my time away because I just wouldn't stop. I'd occasionally stop for food and bathroom though.

I also like to record when no one else is in the room. I like peace and quiet while I'm working hard. Plus it helps the quality of the bank when you have no extra noises in the background. I'd use to stop recording whenever the air condition came on in the house which was like...every 5 minutes. I couldn't stand it. So I record with the air condition on now.

I don't know why but I have a habit of putting vibrato in my voice when I record. It's really annoying. It's like whenever I want vibrato when I'm trying to sing a cover, I can't get it. But when I don't want it, it involuntarily comes out and it just;;; ugh.

When I go back the next day to record, I check my latest sample to get that certain tone again.

- I drink a TON of water, and continue drinking it throughout recording
- I say random phrases in the voice I'm using to get into the feel of it [and oftentimes I will talk only in that voice until the recording is finished for the day]
- If I mess up in the middle of a recording I start making random noises into the microphone
- If it's a continuation of an unfinished bank, I sing along with a few samples to keep the pitch consistent

I think that's really it.

- I try to keep apples and/or apple juice on hand when recording. Water tends to dry my throat out after a while.

- Throat-clearing. Lots of throat-clearing. I'm really picky about my recordings OTL

- When doing CV, I'll record several takes of each sound just to be safe. Usually takes me a few tries to get consonants like "k" and "p" to sound right.

- Also when doing CV, I like to record by vowel sets, then oto each one as I go and test them out. Bad habit I think, it makes recording take forever.

- When doing VCV I typically end up redoing each sample several times before moving onto the next one...
