Working On My First Cover || Anything I Should Know?

So I've decided on the first song I would like to cover using Teto. I began work on the track (it will take a while before I finish it and I'm still getting used to getting the vocals to sound good)
I did a little bit of research on the rules as far as using the voicebanks go and one of the things it mentioned is for doing covers getting explicit permission from the artist? The song I wanted to cover is a western song and was made by a slightly more indie artist. So I certainly do not mind sending an email or DM but whether I actually even get a reply or not (and I imagine this to be most cases) is well. Probably unlikely.

I imagine this isn't actually an issue but I would still like to hear how others handle making covers. Also if there is an issue with covering songs that weren't actually originally UTAU/Vocaloid/Vsynth songs. I would just be pretty sad if I spent all this time working on it just for it to get taken down anyways. While it has not happened in music to me, that has happened to me with videos before lol

Thank you!

You don't have to get permission from the artist to make a cover unless you plan to make it commercially available or make money from uploads. You should be good.

If the artist has given blanket permission for non-commercial covers, or they released the song under a license that allows them (e.g. Creative Commons attribution), then you're OK. Otherwise, I'd recommend at least trying to contact them to ask. Chances are an indie artist won't mind even if you don't, but it's considered polite to do so.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm not the most familiar with being on the creating side so I'm fairly ignorant to a lot of this lol
I'm even learning how to compose a track in Ableton Live at the same time I'm learning how to use UTAU (I'm expecting this to take a long while) :uhuhu:
