Now, here's a music rant I've been wanting to unload onto the fandom/everyone for a while.
I'm tired of people saying that singing is worthless, and that the voice isn't an instrument.
They argue that \"oooh you don't need to know musical theory or structure or chords etc, everyone can sing if they want, balkjfhaljhf\".
Consider this.
Singing is EXACTLY like playing an instrument. Not everyone is good at first. Anyone can start singing/pick up an instrument and even without musical lessons or knowledge become amazing. I'm certain there are many great piano players out there who have never read a piece of music, just like there are great singers who can't read music either. It's just self-built talent, and while some of it may not have the technical perfection of someone trained, it's still talent.
So, there goes the argument about how everyone can sing and not everyone can play an instrument. I can bet you that I could pick up piano if I tried harder even without training. It just takes dedication and practice, like singing techniques.
Now, as to how singing, properly, doesn't require musical skill and knowledge.
As a choral student, I find that highly offensive and stupid.
In class we're constantly sight-reading based on keys and minors and tempo and rhythm, training our ears to pick up chords and following scales, etc. Every year we go to contests, just like band students, and perform practiced pieces and then we go to the sight-reading rooms where we're expected to perfectly follow a piece we've never seen before with about five minutes of practice.
I get how you all say \"anyone can sing\", but like I said, same thing for an instrument. However, to perform professionally, chorally/operatically, you need musical skill. Just as much as a band.
We're always splitting into sections (Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto 1, Alto 2, Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone 1, Baritone 2, Bass) to practice and figure out our parts, making sure we're singing properly like by using the diaphram. We're even concerned with keeping our voices \"well tuned\" and in good condition, much like instruments.
So please. Argue that singing is not on the same level of an instrument. In the end, they're both blowing air out of your mouth in a certain way alongside practice.
This rant. I love you for this rant. <3
