i'm just generally curious, i personally have completely switched to openUTAU after discovering it, but i know a lot of people are sticking with the og UTAU. what are your reasons for doing so?

I'm just going to list them.
1. The envelope UI is TERRIBLE. Everything is incredibly unclear.
2. The wavtool is incredibly choppy and makes even a VB as bulletproof as Yamine Renri sound absolutely choppy. I can't change my wavtool to something GOOD like wavtool4vcv.
3. There's nowhere near as much granular control
4. The phonemizers, especially the ones for English and French, are of incredibly poor quality, and often produce far worse results than manual note entry in og UTAU
5. So. Many. Goddamn. Crashes. I've had UTAU crash on me maybe twice in my 2 and a half years of using it, and I've had OpenUTAU crash at least 50 times, including one time where it managed to crash Windows.
6. It's much slower than og UTAU to render, if I'm using my preferred resampler (Moresampler)
7. It makes VBs with extras a pain in the butt to use due to the phonemizers not playing nice with extras.
8. Most plugins do not work.
9. Getting things to work like a character portrait is really annoying.
10. Save last play is a feature I use a LOT that is not available in OpenUTAU
11. Trying to get a project to play brings my PC to a screeching halt
12. The dictionaries being used are just BAD, and you can't customize them.

13. There is absolutely zero reason this program should take longer to launch than it takes me to open a UST in the original version of UTAU, pick a voicebank, and tune a 30 second long demo piece using the pitedit plugin

This is kind of the opposite of what you're asking but the reason I switched to openutau in the first place is because utau isn't letting me render wav files or import midi files for some reason. I couldn't find a solution to this AT ALL which drove me nuts but everything changed after I discovered openutau.
Also, I just kept getting errors despite doing nothing wrong in the og utau (maybe it's an issue with my pc?) so I pretty much abandoned it and now I only use for OTOing.

OpenUtau also has a basic oto editor, and if you edit the oto externally (like with setparam or vlabeler) it'll automatically reload the voicebank.

Can't be bothered to download it and I don't think I'd use any of the features. Even though I primarily use UTAU for English, I've just gotten so used to doing things manually that I go straight to phoneme input in programs like SynthV or Vocaloid because it gives me more control. Also seconding Gen on the wavtool sounding Funny.
Honestly it's just because og UTAU is what I'm used to lol. I know the ins-and-outs of that software and haven't felt like mastering a new one. I've been meaning to use OpenUTAU more, esp bc I want to develop a phonemizer for my eng reclists, but I haven't done much more than mess around with getting my multiexpression voicebank to work in it.
My reasons for not switching to OpenUtau is basically the choppiness. I feel like OpenUtau is very choppy and for someone who likes to tune realistically it doesn't suit me very well. But maybe nowadays it's better, I remember the time I checked it OpenUtau was annoyingly chopp.
Also, it kinda annoys me to work with VCV, CVC and CVVC formats (Except, maybe, for foreign language vbs. But for these I preffer Arpaising). It's not that they are bad, but I think we just passed the time to have a free synth software that can make CV voicebanks not sound chopp. That's why I'm using DeepVocal right now, I'm getting so much more fun working with it than with utau in general (Although it also has a lot I would love to see it improving, but as it is right now it's pretty fun to work with).

this, im using a cheap lil laptop and openutau rarely crashes on me and it doesnt really render slowly (i use moresampler). but lately it does take a hot minute to load when you first start it up :/

i can relate, it was a bit weird not inputting phonemes into the editor but you can override openUTAU from doing it automatically. i don't quite remember how, i think it's in the flag settings or some shit like that, but you could input phonemes instead iirc
I have a midrange laptop with 16GB of ram and a 3 gigahertz CPU. I run more intensive programs without issue. I just find OU to generally be a much more unstable program than OG UTAU.

Because I just learned how to use Utau a couple years ago and I'm used to it. I don't want to have to relearn everything for some new thing.
I have switched to OpenUTAU completely since it has features that UTAU doesn't have. I get good results in the end and it's still getting updated almost every single day. I still have UTAU since I use it to test out new voicebanks I create and I need it to make the prefix maps for those banks as well. OpenUTAU isn't really difficult to learn. Only took me about 3 or 2 days to learn!

The reason I haven't switched is because of how slow it runs on my laptop, it crashes and the rendering takes AGES. So when I'm trying to tune, the background automatic rendering makes the whole program so slow. Also trying to add voicebanks is such a complicated process but on UTAU 4.18 it's very easy and fast, you just put the voicebank folder into the voice folder, which takes maybe 5 minutes for the whole process compared to 15-20 minutes for a large voicebank. I tried to add Gahata Meiji to openUTAU and it took almost 30 minutes for the whole voicebank to finish. Even though openUTAU offers advanced tuning options for voicebanks it's much more difficult and unintuitive to use. So I recommend the original utau. If all of these problems were fixed I would use openUTAU.
Go to Tools > Preferences and set Pre-render to Off.
if you already have an existing voicebank folder for UTAU, you can set that as an additional folder in OpenUtau. Go to Tools > Preferences, find Additional Singer Path, then press the Select button to pick your voice folder.
in openUTAU, if the voicebank has a character.txt, you can just drag and drop the zip file and it will install automatically.
